Wednesday of the Second Week of Easter
Gospel: John 3:16-21

Today is Wednesday of the Second Week of Easter. The Gospel for Mass is taken from the reflections of John in the Gospel of Saint John, following the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus about rebirth and new life.

The world we live in today is filled with various emotions that flow from the depths of the human heart. Among these complex and changeable emotions, some are aspirations for a better future, some are longings for the heavenly homeland, but more often, they are evil thoughts: unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness (see: Mark 7:21-22). In our view, as people living in this world, we are inevitably influenced by all that belongs to it, and this becomes an excuse for us to make arbitrary judgments of others. So much so that we may even think: the God spoken of by Jesus is a just God, who came into the world to condemn each of us, rejoicing in passing judgment.

John testifies: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17). By the grace granted by Christ, we are freed from sin and death through receiving the Baptism of Christ, no longer living in the death that sin brings to our souls. Since we are united with Him through receiving the Baptism of Christ and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, let us have the same courage to accept the light of Christ—no longer acting as children of darkness, but as children of light.

As we recall year by year the mysteries
by which, through the restoration of its original dignity,
human nature has received the hope of rising again,
we earnestly beseech your mercy, Lord,
that what we celebrate in faith
we may possess in unending love.

我們時常會如同尼苛德摩一樣,按照我們對事物的看法,講述從我們的眼中所看到的這個世界。在我們看來,我們眼中的這個世界,是一個物質生活極其豐富的世界。幾時我們的雙目注視著屬於這個世界的一切,我們便會如同那些親眼看到耶穌所做的一切,親耳聽到耶穌所宣講的一切,仍拒絕相信耶穌就是自天降下的人子。

耶穌對尼苛德摩說:“如果我給你們講論世上的事,你們尚且不相信,如果我給你們講論天上的事,你們又怎麼會相信呢?”(參看:若3:12)祂所說的“世上的事”,就是祂要在這個註定要消逝的世界建立的天主的世界,祂所說的“天上的事”,就是耶穌要帶給這個的天主之國的事理。猶太人不信耶穌所說的一切,是因為他們認為耶穌是瑪利亞之子,而非天主之子,他們渴望一個能拯救他們脫離羅馬人的政治性默西亞,而非天主的默西亞。

今天,在我們的團體內,也有許多人按照字面意思來理解耶穌所說的一切。我願意對這些兄弟姐妹說:富於仁慈的主基督,願意將祂將祂自己賜給了我們,為使我們能藉著領受祂的聖洗,在祂從地上被高舉時而洞開的聖肋之中流出的慈悲的源泉,洗淨因原罪給我們帶來的罪汙,為使我們能藉著所領受的聖洗,穿上基督,在基督內重獲新生。當我們在天主聖三圓滿的共融中,領受如此偉大愛情的聖事時,我們便是相信那由自天降下而仍在天上的人子,並相信從祂口中發出的一切言語,從中得知天國的真相。

全能的天主,求祢使我們能宣講復活之主的德能,好叫我們既已領受祂恩典有確證,當祂所賜的一切完全顯現時,能獲享祂所賜的諸恩。藉著祢的子,我們的主耶穌基督,祢和祂及聖神,是天主,永生永王。亞孟。

Gospel: 3:7B-15

Today is Tuesday of the Second Week of Easter. The Gospel for Mass is taken from the narrative of the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus in the Gospel of Saint John.

We often, like Nicodemus, speak of this world as we see it with our eyes, according to our perception of things. In our view, this world we behold is one of extreme material abundance. When our gaze is fixed on all that belongs to this world, we become like those who saw with their own eyes all that Jesus did and heard with their own ears all that He preached yet refused to believe that Jesus is the Son of Man come down from heaven.

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?” (See: John 3:12). What He meant by “earthly things” was the kingdom of God He intended to establish in this world destined to pass away; what He meant by “heavenly things” was the truth of the Kingdom of God that Jesus would bring to this world. The Jews did not believe all that Jesus said because they thought Jesus was the son of Mary, not the Son of God; they longed for a political Messiah who could save them from the Romans, not the Messiah of God.

Today, within our community, many also understand everything Jesus said in a literal sense. I wish to say to these brothers and sisters: The merciful Lord Christ desired to give Himself to us, so that through receiving His Baptism, we might be cleansed of the stain of original sin from the source of mercy flowing from His pierced side when He was lifted up from the earth. And so that through the same Baptism, we might put on Christ and be born anew in Him. When we receive this sacrament of such great love in the full communion of the Most Holy Trinity, we believe in the Son of Man who came down from heaven and is still in heaven, and in all the words that proceed from His mouth, learning from them the truth of the Kingdom.

Enable us, we pray, almighty God,
to proclaim the power of the risen Lord,
that we, who have received the pledge of his gift,
may come to possess all he gives
when it is fully revealed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever

今天是復活期第二周星期一,也是殉道教宗聖瑪爾定一世的自由紀念。取自聖若望的福音經文向我們展現了耶穌和尼苛德摩之間的一番對話。我願意借此機會提供一些反思。

有時候,我們會如同尼苛德摩一樣,會把耶穌所說的天主的國想成是這個世界所有國度的延續。可是,耶穌所說的天主的國,是一個神國,在那個國度,只有愛人的天主和被天主所愛的人,所有人都是兄弟姐妹,再也沒有君王和臣民,領導和被領導的關係不再。

有時候,我們會如同尼苛德摩一樣,會把耶穌所說的新生想成重生。因為我們並沒有理解耶穌所說的生命觀,在我們看來,重生意味著回到母腹,重新由母親孕育,再次來到這個世界。可是,耶穌所說的新生,就是領受祂的洗禮和天主聖神的傅油,與祂同死,與祂同葬,在祂內開始新的生命。正如聖保祿所說的那樣:當我們領受基督的聖洗時,那有死的舊我,已與基督同釘在十字架上了,使那屬罪惡的自我消逝,好叫我們不再作罪惡的奴隸,因為已死的人,便脫離了罪惡。(參看:羅6:6-7)這就是耶穌想要傳遞給我們的生命觀。

親愛的兄弟姐妹:我們既然已在基督的無限慈愛內獲得新生,就應當隨從天主聖神的意願,而非隨從我們每人的意願,我們所隨從的聖神,一如耶穌對尼苛德摩說的那樣:“風隨意向哪裡吹,你聽到風的響聲,卻不知道風從哪裡來,往哪裡去:凡由聖神而生的就是這樣。”(參看:若3:8)真正隨從天主聖神的人,必會按照天主聖神所啟示的那樣,在每日的生活中,實踐基督教導的一切,他必遵照救主的訓示,按天主的聖意為真道作證,為使世人藉著祂所做的一切,看到那高懸於十字架上的基督,以使世人因著那高懸於十字架上的基督,獲得新的生命,永久脫離罪惡及死亡的束縛,從而獲得屬於天主子女的真正自由。

全能的天主,我們藉著逾越的良藥,超凡脫俗,煥然一新,求祢改變我們,使我們肖似我們在天造主的肖像。藉著祢的子,我們的主耶穌基督,祢和祂及聖神,是天主,永生永王。亞孟。

Or Optional Memorial of Saint Martin I, Pope and Martyr
Gospel: John 3:1-8

Today is Monday of the Second Week of Easter, also the Optional Memorial of Saint Martin I, Pope and Martyr. The Gospel passage from Saint John presents us with a dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus. I would like to take this opportunity to offer some reflections.

Sometimes, like Nicodemus, we might think of the Kingdom of God that Jesus speaks of as a continuation of all the kingdoms of this world. However, the Kingdom of God that Jesus speaks of is a divine kingdom. In that realm, there is only the God who loves and those loved by God; all are brothers and sisters. There are no longer kings and subjects, nor relationships of leaders and followers.

Sometimes, again like Nicodemus, we might conceive of the new birth spoken of by Jesus as a physical rebirth. Because we do not understand Jesus’ view of life, we imagine rebirth to mean returning to our mother’s womb to be conceived once more and come into this world again. But the new birth Jesus speaks of is receiving His baptism and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, dying with Him, being buried with Him, and beginning a new life in Him. As Saint Paul says: “We know that our old self was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away, that we might no longer be in bondage to sin. For a dead person has been set free from sin” (cf. Rom 6:6-7). This is the view of life that Jesus wants to convey to us.

Dear brothers and sisters: Now that we have received new life in the infinite mercy of Christ, we ought to follow the will of the Holy Spirit, not the will of each of us. The Spirit we follow, as Jesus said to Nicodemus, is like this: “The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit” (cf. Jn 3:8). A person who truly follows the Holy Spirit will, in daily life, put into practice all that Christ taught, as revealed by the Holy Spirit. He will bear witness to the truth in accordance with the Lord’s precepts and for the glory of God’s holy will. This is so that, through all he does, the world may see Christ lifted high on the cross, and that through the One lifted high on the cross, the world may obtain new life, be forever freed from the bonds of sin and death and thus attain the true freedom of God’s children.

Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who have been renewed by paschal remedies, transcending the likeness of our earthly parentage, may be transformed in the image of our heavenly maker. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

今天是救主復活八日慶期第八天,教會在今天慶祝救主慈悲主日。

教宗聖若望保祿二世在2000年4月30日在聖伯多祿廣場為傅天娜修女舉行封聖大典的講道中提到:正如宗徒昔日所做的那樣,今天,人類也必須把復活的基督迎入歷史的樓房 —— 祂展示十字架苦刑的聖傷,再一次說:“願平安與你們同在!”人類也必須使自己受到復活的主基督所賜的聖神觸動並充滿。聖神醫治我們心靈的創傷,推倒那使我們與天主隔絕,彼此分離的隔閡。同時恢復聖父愛的喜樂和手足的共融。因此,在復活期第二主日,接受那發自天主聖言,如今臨到我們身上的訊息,極為重要。從此,全教會要把這個主日稱作“救主慈悲主日”。在各篇讀經中,禮儀似乎指明了慈悲的道路。它重建了每個人與天主的關係,也締造了人與人之間新的手足情誼的共融。基督教導我們說:“人不僅要領受和體驗天主的仁慈,人也蒙召去向別人行仁慈:‘憐憫人的人是有福的,因為他們要受到憐憫。’(參看:瑪5:7)”(參看:《富於仁慈的天主(Dives in misericordia)》第14號)祂也向我們展示了慈悲的諸多途徑,不僅要寬恕罪過,而且要觸及人類的各種急難。耶穌俯身關注人類各種物質和精神上的貧窮。(參看:教宗聖若望保祿二世:《為瑪利亞·傅天娜·克瓦爾斯卡(Maria Faustyna Kowalska) 封聖彌撒講道》2000年4月30日,第3號後段,第4號第1段)

今天取自聖若望福音的經文所展現的,恰恰與教宗聖若望保祿二世的教導完美呼應。聖若望告訴我們:耶穌來到門徒所在的房屋,站在他們中間,對他們說:“願平安與你們同在。”祂說這話的時候,把自己的手和肋膀給他們看。(參看:若20:19B-20A)祂並沒有想要指責門徒,而是向門徒展示祂對我們每人所懷的慈愛。隨後,耶穌對那被稱作狄狄默的多默說:“把你的手指放在這裡,看看我的手,把你的手放在到這裡,伸進我的肋膀,不要懷疑,但要相信。”(參看:若20:27)以此堅固祂的信德。同樣,祂也邀請我們通過觸摸我們在生活中遇到的各種急難之人,體驗到祂對世人所懷的憐憫,透過我們把祂的憐憫和愛帶給所有人。

親愛的弟兄姐妹!在此慈悲主日,讓我們一起向天主獻上祈禱:

Divine Mercy Sunday
Gospel: John 20:19-31

Today is the eighth day of the Octave of the Resurrection of the Lord, and the Church celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday.

In his homily at the canonization Mass of Sr. Faustina Kowalska in St. Peter’s Square on April 30, 2000, Pope St. John Paul II said: “Just as the Apostles did of old, so too today humanity must welcome the risen Christ into the upper room of history—He, showing the sacred wounds of His crucifixion, repeats: ‘Peace be with you!’ Humanity must allow itself to be touched and filled with the Holy Spirit given by the risen Christ. The Holy Spirit heals the wounds of the heart, breaks down the barriers that separate us from God and divide us from one another, and at the same time restores the joy of the Father’s love and the communion of fraternal unity.”

Therefore, it is of great importance that on the Second Sunday of Easter, we receive the message that comes to us from the Word of God, which is now celebrated throughout the Church as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” In the various readings, the liturgy points to the path of mercy, which re-establishes each person’s relationship with God and creates new communion of fraternal love among human beings. Christ taught us: “Man not only receives and experiences the mercy of God, but is also called to practice mercy toward others: ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy’ (cf. Mt 5:7)”(cf. Dives in Misericordia, no. 14). He also showed us the many paths of mercy, which not only forgive sins but reach out to all human needs and emergencies. Jesus bent over every form of human poverty, both material and spiritual (cf. Pope St. John Paul II, Homily at the Canonization Mass of Maria Faustyna Kowalska, April 30, 2000, post-paragraph 3, paragraph 4, section 1).

The passage from the Gospel of St. John read today perfectly echoes the teaching of Pope St. John Paul II. St. John tells us: “Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side”(cf. Jn 20:19b-20a). He did not come to accuse the disciples, but to show them the tender love He bears for each of us. Then, to Thomas, called Didymus, Jesus said: “Put your finger here and see My hands; put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not doubt, but believe”(cf. Jn 20:27), to strengthen his faith. In the same way, He invites us to experience His compassion for the world by touching those in need whom we encounter in our lives, and to bring His mercy and love to all through us.

Dear brothers and sisters! On this Divine Mercy Sunday, let us together offer our prayer to God:

God of everlasting mercy,
who in the very recurrence of the paschal feast
kindle the faith of the people you have made your own,
increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed,
that all may grasp and rightly understand
in what font they have been washed,
by whose Spirit they have been reborn,
by whose Blood they have been redeemed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
