Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 12:35-38

Today is Tuesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time. The passage taken from the Holy Gospel of Luke presents to us the Lord Jesus’ teaching on vigilance. Let us try to understand.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Gird your loins and light your lamps, and be like those servants who await their master’s return from the wedding banquet, ready to open for him immediately when he comes. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.” (cf. Lk 12:35-37)

In our daily lives, we often see many sources of light. For example: the sun that illuminates all things. A passage in the Gospel says: God makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (cf. Mt 5:45) Another example: “the true light that enlightens everyone, coming into the world.” (cf. Jn 1:9) Also as at the beginning of today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks of: the light from a lamp that is lit. (cf. Lk 12:35-36) All these common lights in our lives are graces that God bestows upon the world, but they will eventually fade away.

Today, Jesus asks us to light our lamps. This lamp is no longer the common lamp we see in daily life, but the light of Christ that we received at the baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This light is the light that St. John the Apostle tells us shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (cf. Jn 1:5) If we want this light to keep burning and never be extinguished, we need to keep our spirit always united with the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ. To be united with the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we need to pray unceasingly, read the Bible diligently, and by receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, allow our souls to be fully nourished, so that the eyes of our faith may always see the presence of the Word of God, and that we may humbly listen to the teachings of the Word of God through the Bible and the Church. Relying on the grace of God, we can continually restrain impure thoughts and disordered affections that go against the will of God. Then, in our present life, we will constantly live out the spirit of the Gospel. When we see the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, those in prison, the little ones, and the marginalized, we will imitate Jesus Christ and selflessly help them, making our hearts beat in unison with the Heart of Jesus. Then the merciful God will, according to His holy will, bestow upon us various spiritual graces.

Almighty ever-living God,
grant that we may always conform our will to yours
and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
