Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Gospel: John 15:9-11

Today is Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter. The passage from the Gospel of Saint John continues to present Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples before His Passion. In this Gospel passage, Jesus continues to expound upon His commandment of love.

What kind of love does Jesus speak of? It is a love that holds nothing back, a love that stops at no cost. As He Himself says: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13) Yet, how many of us would actually lay down our lives for our friends? In our eyes, sacrificing our life for a friend seems like an impulsive and irrational act. However, the love Jesus speaks of is a total, complete love. For the sake of loving His disciples and loving us, He willingly allowed Himself to be nailed to the Cross, enduring its bitter torment, so that the infinitely merciful Heavenly Father, through all that He accomplished, might forgive the sins we have committed and restore us to our identity as sons and daughters of God.

The love Jesus speaks of is an initiative love, not a passive one. As He says: It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will last. (cf. John 15:16) Even before we knew Him, He had already chosen us. Jesus is soon to be taken up and seated at the right hand of the Father, yet He remains present in our midst; He is always with us. If we experience love in our lives: such as the nurturing love of our parents, the instructive love of our teachers, the supportive love of our superiors, or the pastoral care of our priests—we can see in these the very love of Jesus for us.

Through the grace of Baptism and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer called children of the devil or children of darkness. Our Lord Jesus Christ, rich in mercy, vanquished death for us by the Precious Blood He shed out of love for us, stripping the devil of his dominion over us so that he can no longer master us. Therefore, let us live within the love of Christ, manifesting Jesus’ love for us through the actions of our daily lives. In this way, we become true disciples of Jesus Christ, and the prayers we offer to God will grow ever more sincere. The Holy Spirit dwelling within us will surely, in response to our faith, bestow upon us every grace we need.

Grant us, Lord, we pray,
that, being rightly conformed to the paschal mysteries,
what we celebrate in joy
may protect and save us with perpetual power.

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

什麼才是愛呢?聖保祿宗徒教導我們說:“愛是堅忍,愛是良善。愛不嫉妒,不浮誇,不吹捧,不粗魯,不尋求己利,不暴躁,不為受傷而憂愁,不為不法之事而歡喜,卻以真理為樂,承受一切,相信一切,渴望一切,忍受一切。”(參看:格前13:4-7)保祿對耶穌所說的愛,進行了精闢的總結。可是,我們仍然會覺得,這愛離我們很遠,甚至是抽象的,甚至我們感受不到這愛。

我們之所以感受不到這愛,是因為我們沒有按照耶穌基督教導我們的那樣生活,因為我們追隨的世界觀,依然是屬於這個世界的世界觀。這個世界的世界觀所教導的,不是愛,而是仇恨,人們總是想著報復彼此。

今天,耶穌教導我們說:“如果你們遵守我的誡命,你們就存留在我的愛內。正如我遵守我父的誡命,存留在祂的愛內一樣。”(若15:10)意思是:只有我們真正放下心中的仇恨,把心中的仇恨,心中的委屈,心中的各種難受交給天主,才能存留在祂的愛內。縱然這會是一個極其痛苦的過程,但是,我們依然要堅信天主,相信祂不會拋棄我們。

天主,我們是罪人,卻賴祢的恩典成義,我們雖然可憐,卻得到了祢的祝福。求祢使那些因信德成義的人,藉著祢的工作,祢的恩典,總不缺乏堅持下去的勇氣和毅力。藉著祢的子,我們的主耶穌基督,祢和祂及聖神,是天主,永生永王。亞孟。

Gospel: John 15:9-11

Today is Thursday of the Fifth Week of Easter, the passage from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John continues to present the Farewell Discourse of Jesus: His words to the disciples before His Passion. In this passage, Jesus mentions love repeatedly.

What is love? Saint Paul the Apostle teaches us: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not inflated with pride. It is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (cf. 1 Cor 13:4-7). Paul offers a profound summary of the love proclaimed by Jesus. Yet, we often feel that this love remains distant, abstract, or even imperceptible to us.
The reason we fail to perceive this love is that we do not live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ; instead, we continue to follow the mindset of this world. The wisdom of this age teaches not love, but hatred; it teaches people to seek revenge against one another.

Today, Jesus instructs us: “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” (John 15:10). This means only by truly laying down the hatred in our hearts; by entrusting our resentments and every inner affliction to God, can we abide in His love. Although this is an exceedingly painful process, we must still hold fast to God, trusting that He will never forsake us.

O God, restorer and lover of innocence,
direct the hearts of your servants towards yourself,
that those you have set free from the darkness of unbelief
may never stray from the light of your truth.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever

今天是復活期第五周星期三。取自聖若望福音的經文繼續向我們展示耶穌在受難以前,祂對自己門徒所說的臨別贈言。在這段敘述中,我們將會聽到耶穌所說的真葡萄樹的比喻。


我們時常會有機會看到那些長在樹上的葡萄,按時結出豐富的果實。當這些葡萄樹結出豐碩的果實後,葡萄園的園丁便來收集他們,並用葡萄製作各種美酒和飲料。


富於仁慈的天主,按照自己的肖像,就是按照祂自己的肖像造了我們。祂更把祂所創造的一切交給我們管理。當我們的原罪亞當和厄娃違背了祂的誡命,被逐出樂園以後,祂繼續派遣先知,民長,司祭,國王,不斷訓誨祂心愛的以色列,祂甚至賜下了自己的獨生子,親自向我們彰顯祂的仁慈。我們的主耶穌基督,祂是降生成人的天主聖言,祂並沒有憑祂自己說話,而是憑派遣祂來的父說話,祂憑祂自己,沒有做什麼,是父在祂內繼續祂的工作。而祂所做的一切,只是希望我們能結出果實,結出與祂賞賜我們諸多恩寵相稱的果實。


我們要怎樣才能結出這些果實呢?就是要使自己始終生活在基督內。生活在基督內,就是要藉著領受基督的洗禮,與祂同葬,與祂同死,把有死的舊我與基督同釘在十字架上,好使我們能與復活的主耶穌基督,一起在天主的世界內開始新的生活。


我們要如何做,才能與復活的主耶穌基督,一起在天主的世界內開始新的生活呢?就是要存留在祂內。怎麼做呢?就是要勤領聖體,當我們經常來到聖堂參與彌撒的時候,天主聖言就時常充滿我們,祂不僅充滿我們的三司五官,更願意我們通過領受祂的聖體聖血,使祂存留在我們內。祂一存留在我們體內,就以祂天主性的生命充滿我們,使我們充滿祂的恩典。如果我們承行祂的旨意,按照祂的教導去做,那麼,我們就和祂一起,在天主的世界內開始新的生活。

天主,無罪之人的再造者和鍾愛者;求祢引導祢僕人的心歸向祢。願那些由祢從不信的黑暗中解救出來的人,永不偏離祢真理的光輝。藉著祢的子,我們的主耶穌基督,祢和祂及聖神,是天主,永生永王。亞孟。

Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Gospel: John 15:1-8

Today is Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Easter. The passage from the Gospel of Saint John continues to present Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples before His Passion. In this passage, we hear the parable of the True Vine.

We often see grapevines growing and bearing abundant fruit in due season. When the vines bear rich clusters, the vinedresser gathers them to make wine and other beverages.

The Lord, rich in mercy, created us in His own image and likeness, and entrusted all of creation to our care. Even after our first parents, Adam and Eve, disobeyed His command and were driven from Paradise, He continued to send prophets, judges, priests, and kings to instruct His beloved Israel. He even sent His only Son to reveal His compassion among us. Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God, does not speak on His own authority, but on the Father’s who sent Him. He does nothing on His own, but the Father, dwelling in Him, continues His work. All that He does is so that we may bear fruit—fruit worthy of the many graces He bestows upon us.

How can we bear such fruit? By remaining always in Christ. To live in Christ means to be buried and die with Him in Baptism, crucifying our sinful old self with Him on the Cross, so that we may begin a new life with the risen Lord Jesus Christ in the world of God.

How do we begin this new life with the risen Lord? By abiding in Him. How do we abide? By frequently receiving the Eucharist. When we come regularly to church for Mass, the Holy Word of God fills us—not only our senses and faculties, but also our very being. By receiving His Holy Body and Blood, He makes His dwelling within us. Once He dwells within us, He fills us with His divine life and grace. If we do His will and follow His teachings, then we truly live with Him in the new life of God’s kingdom.

O God, restorer and lover of innocence,
direct the hearts of your servants towards yourself,

我們初次來到一個陌生的地方,因為我們不瞭解那個地方的風俗,當地的交通,以及住宿條件,儘管我們在去之前,已經做足了攻略,我們依然會對在陌生地方發生的一切感到不安。初次踏上工作崗位的時候,如果領導給我們分配的工作,超過我們的工作能力,超越了我們的工作職責,這個時候,我們就會感到苦惱,害怕我們會因此丟掉當下的工作。可是,我們有沒有想過,在我們感到不安,感到苦惱,感到害怕的深層次原因?原因很簡單。就是我們所犯的罪。罪會讓我們感到不自由,會讓我們的靈魂感受到失去天主的愛,因此感到苦惱,感到痛苦。當我們談起罪的時候,就會把罪歸咎給我們的原祖父母。我們也許會抱怨說:由於第一亞當和第一厄娃意圖使自己如同天主一樣,聽信了魔鬼的話,違背了天主的誡命,造成我們全人類都染上了原罪。當我們如此抱怨的時候,在我們和天主之間,在我們和天主創造的全部受造之間,就沒有了平安。
耶穌所說,祂要賜給我們的平安(參看:若14:27),指的是一種藉著和好聖事,與天主和祂創造的一切修好,如同祂所做的那樣,始終承行天主的聖意,使自己的內心與天主同在,進而獲得的平安。祂的平安,是世界所不能給的。因為這個世界,終將消逝。可是,天主是永恆存在的,祂的平安,不會隨著時間的消逝而消散。
耶穌說:“你們聽我給你們說過:‘我要走了,我會再回到你們身邊。’如果你們愛我,就會因我到父那裡去感到歡喜,因為父比我大。”(參看:若14:28)祂的話是信實的。因為如今我們每次在聖堂領受聖事,參與團體祈禱時,祂就在我們身邊,不斷陪伴我們。生活中,我們時常會經驗到一些波折。可是,耶穌始終在我們身邊,祂常與我們同在。因此,讓我們懷著對祂的信靠之情,勇敢向祂獻上祈禱:

天主,祢藉復活的基督再造我們于永生,求祢恩賜祢的子民,在信德和望德上堅定,好使我們總不懷疑祢所啟示的恩許。藉著祢的子,我們的主耶穌基督,祢和祂及聖神,是天主,永生永王。亞孟。

Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Easter
Gospel: John 14:27-31A

Today is Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Easter. The passage from the Gospel of Saint John continues to present Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples before His Passion.

When we first arrive in a strange place, despite having prepared thoroughly beforehand, we remain uneasy about everything that unfolds there because we are unfamiliar with local customs, transportation, and lodging. Similarly, when we first begin working, if our superiors assign tasks beyond our ability or responsibility, we become distressed, fearing the loss of our job. Yet, have we considered the root cause of this unease, distress, and fear? The reason is simple: it is the sin we have committed. Sin enslaves us, making our souls feel deprived of God’s love, thus causing anguish and pain.

When discussing sin, we often blame our first parents. We might complain: “Because Adam and Eve desired to be like God, heeding the serpent’s words and transgressing the divine command, they stained all humanity with original sin.” Yet, such complaints sever the peace between us, God, and all creation.

The peace Jesus promises (cf. John 14:27) is a peace achieved through the Sacrament of Reconciliation—a peace that reconciles us with God and all He has made. It comes from always doing the Father’s will, uniting our hearts with Him. This peace is not as the world gives. The world is passing away, but God is eternal; His peace does not fade with time.

Jesus says, “You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I” (cf. John 14:28). His word is true. Even now, whenever we receive the sacraments in church or join in communal prayer, He is beside us, accompanying us always. Though we often encounter trials in life, Jesus remains at our side. Therefore, let us confidently entrust ourselves to Him in prayer:

O God, who restore us to eternal life
in the Resurrection of Christ,
grant your people constancy in faith and hope,
that we may never doubt the promises
of which we have learned from you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
