Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Gospel: Luke 2:41-51

Today is the Saturday after the Second Sunday after Pentecost and the Church celebrates the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The ancient tradition of the Church tells us: Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary originated with St. John Eudes in the seventeenth century and developed in parallel with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. If the Sacred Heart reveals the infinite love of God for mankind, then Mary’s Immaculate Heart presents us with a model of how we ought to love God. Honoring her Immaculate Heart not only acknowledges her unique privileges but is also the path leading us to her Son.

Today, the text from the Gospel of Luke shows us the process of the Blessed Virgin Mary finding her beloved Son again in the Temple of Jerusalem. I would like to offer some reflections on this Memorial.

We often focus our attention on all things belonging to this world, choosing to follow all the powers of this world, indulging in the pleasure brought to us by everything of this world, and in all kinds of luxurious enjoyments. Whenever we are immersed in these things, our external actions cause us to drift away from God. Whenever God is not present in our lives, we will be like Joseph and Mary losing Jesus, anxiously searching for Him among the crowds.

In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary also had this experience; she, too, searched for Jesus among the crowds because she had lost Him. She did not let Jesus separate from her intentionally, but it was a special grace from God. For in the end, she did not find Jesus in the house at Nazareth, but in the Temple in Jerusalem. This is precisely God’s grace: God, through her, points out a path to find Jesus for us. He tells us: He is not the Son of God as described by the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Herodians, the chief priests, the scribes, or the elders of the people. He is the Son of Man. The God He speaks of is not a God who rewards good and punishes evil, nor is He a God who delights in sacrifices offered to Him; He is a God who takes the initiative to draw close to humanity.

From St. Luke’s narrative, we can also see another characteristic of the Blessed Mother: she kept all these things in her heart and pondered them. She did not interfere with God’s plan, but actively participated in God’s plan of redemption, discerning the Holy Will of God in her life and submitting to it.

O God, who prepared a fit dwelling place for the Holy Spirit in the Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, graciously grant that through her intercession we may be a worthy temple of your glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Gospel: Matthew 11:25–30

Today is Friday of the Tenth Week of Ordinary Time. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus today. Pope St. John Paul II teaches us: To venerate the Heart of Christ is to enter deeply into the contemplation of the inner core of the Savior’s Sacred Heart; the Bible indicates that this Sacred Heart is precisely the center of His Person, and the very place of that love which has saved the world. If the human heart is already a fathomless mystery known only to God, then how sublime and exalted is the Heart of Jesus—for within it beats the pulse of life of the Word. As revealed by Scripture and extolled in the Litany of the Sacred Heart, we find in the Heart of Jesus all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and the fullness of the Godhead. To save humanity lost through disobedience, God wills to grant man a “new heart” consonant with His merciful will; that Heart is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the wondrous work of the Holy Spirit—which began to beat in the Virgin Mary’s womb and was pierced by the lance upon the Cross, thereby becoming an inexhaustible fountain of life for all. This Heart has now become a powerful pledge of hope for men and women throughout the world.

Today, the text taken from the Gospel of Matthew is undoubtedly a word of consolation spoken by Jesus to each one of us. For He says: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (cf. Mt 11:28) Clearly, He is inviting us to lay down before Him the burdens of our hearts, as well as the toil brought upon us by money, power, and social status.

We may feel that the suffering we endure at present is like a heavy load. We constantly rush about for our livelihood, constantly striving to reach a certain stage in life. In experiencing all this, inevitably, we directly face the pressure exerted on us by the ruler of this world and his agents. When we undergo these experiences, our souls become distressed by all that we encounter in life, feeling pained as if carrying a heavy burden, unable to catch our breath. When faced with the pressures of life and the world, we often resort to ways we deem correct to try to solve our problems. Thus, we become “the wise and learned” in the eyes of God yet forget that everything we possess at this moment comes from God’s bounty.

Today, let us gaze upon Christ suspended on the Cross, and that Heart pierced for love of us, so that this Sacred Heart may heal us, cleanse us, and transform us. May our hearts be attuned to the Heart of Jesus Christ, and may this heart, conformed to His, drive us no longer to live according to the logic of this present life, but according to the logic of God’s world as taught by Jesus Christ. The world of God taught by Jesus Christ knows only a God who loves man, and a humanity loved by God; all are brothers and sisters, and there is no longer any division by social class.

O God, who in the Heart of your Son,
wounded by our sins,
bestow on us in mercy
the boundless treasures of your love,
grant, we pray,
that, in paying him the homage of our devotion,
we may also offer worthy reparation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Coffee with God:Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle

Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle
Gospel: Matthew 10:7–13

Today is Thursday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time. The Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Barnabas the Apostle. The Roman Martyrology tells us that Saint Barnabas (first century) is frequently mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. He introduced Saint Paul to the Twelve Apostles and accompanied him on his first missionary journey. Saint Barnabas was also present at the Council of Jerusalem; although he was not one of the Twelve, he has long been venerated with the title of “Apostle.” Traditions regarding his death vary: one holds that he was martyred in his native Cyprus, while others record that he died in Salamis, Greece; there is also an improbable claim that he was the first Bishop of Milan. His name is included in the Roman Canon.

In today’s Gospel, taken from Saint Matthew, we witness Jesus giving instructions to His Twelve Apostles as He sends them out for their first mission. I wish to offer some reflections upon these words.

Why did Jesus command His Apostles to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom of God? Because the Kingdom of which Jesus spoke stands in stark contrast to that preached by the scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, elders, and chief priests of His time. They conceived of the Kingdom as ruled by a God who rewards the good and punishes the wicked—a God who delights in sacrifice, who harshly chastises those who fail to offer oblations, and who admits only the sacrificers into His realm. But the Kingdom proclaimed by Jesus belongs to a God who loves all, a God who is Love itself; all who are beloved by Him may enter.

Furthermore, Jesus commanded them: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give” (cf. Matt 10:8). This signifies that they were to heal those whose souls were infected by sin, to proclaim the Word of God to them, and to awaken them by that Word, lest they slumber any longer in sin. Rather, through the grace of Baptism and the power of the Divine Word, they were to be cleansed of their defilement and brought to live in the world of God which Jesus proclaimed, no longer enslaved by the devil.

I would add: Today, we who have received Christ’s Baptism and the Holy Spirit are likewise called to fulfill this same mission. We must actively seek out those whose hearts are wounded, those whose faith has grown tepid for various reasons, those who are marginalized, the hungry, the thirsty, the homeless, those in acute distress, and the infirm. To them, we must reveal the countenance of God’s mercy, bringing them the Gospel of Christ. Thus, having received Baptism like us, they too may be cleansed, crucifying the old self marked by the death of sin, allowing that sinful ego to perish, so that being grafted onto our Lord Jesus, they may attain eternal life. Let them no longer follow the ways of the world, but the law of the world of God as taught by Jesus.

On this Memorial of Saint Barnabas, the Church invites us to imitate his example: to be steadfast in the Sacred Word, diligently accompanying brothers and sisters who have strayed, that they may experience the paternal love and warmth of the Father proclaimed by Jesus of Nazareth, following the guidance of the Holy Spirit and walking in the footsteps of Christ toward holiness.

O God, who decreed that Saint Barnabas,a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, should be set apart to convert the nations, grant that the Gospel of Christ, which he strenuously preached, may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed.Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God, for ever and ever.

Memorial of Saint Barnabas, Apostle
Gospel: Matthew 5:20–26

Today’s Gospel continues the Sermon on the Mount from Saint Matthew. In this passage, we hear mention of the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. What does this mean? We know that in the time of Jesus, the Pharisees were the “Rabbis” of Israel. They taught the people through parables; in interpreting the Law, they included ancestral prohibitions, customs, and what they called the traditions of the elders. They followed the logic of this world. The logic of this world told them that if they gave something to others, they must receive something commensurate in return. Thus, they would only invite those whom they considered close kin to share meals with them. The scribes were biblical scholars who, like the Pharisees, interpreted Scripture arbitrarily, seeing themselves as the very voice of God. They regarded themselves as righteous and supremely pure.

We can see our own reflection in these scribes and Pharisees. Whenever we interpret the Word of God according to our own ideas, or proclaim it in ways we deem fitting, and whenever we judge or insult our brothers and sisters as worldly people do, we become the scribes and Pharisees Jesus speaks of. For we too reject the Word of God. At such times, we are not proclaiming the Word of God; we are wounding Him. For every person is made in the image of God.

Today, as the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Barnabas, we are invited to imitate his example: to remain faithful to the Sacred Word, to strive to accompany those brothers and sisters who have gone astray, so that they may experience the tender love and warmth of the Father proclaimed by Jesus of Nazareth, and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, walk in the footsteps of Christ toward holiness.

O God, who decreed that Saint Barnabas,
a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit,
should be set apart to convert the nations,
grant that the Gospel of Christ,
which he strenuously preached,
may be faithfully proclaimed by word and by deed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
