Coffee with God: 6 October 2024

Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 10: 2-16
Divorce is the absence of the presence

As a test, someone asks Jesus, “Can a man divorce his wife?” Jesus could offer two possible responses to this age-old Hebrew inquiry: “No, unless she violated the marriage agreement by being unfaithful,” or “Yes, certainly. If she fails to fulfil her duties as a wife and homemaker to your satisfaction, you have the option to divorce her.”…kind of like being fired from a job.”

We discover is that Jesus doesn’t answer yes and no questions. Jesus sees marriage as a small step toward God’s bigger concern: to draw all things together in grace. What God does in marriage is just a tiny sample of what Jesus does for all creation on the cross – to be broken to give life. God does not simply walk past the poor and the weak, he cares for them.

Jesus takes the time to stop and show concern for the woman and her children who are being forced out of their homes. He worries that they will face social stigma and struggle to make a living. This issue is not confined to the past; even in the present day, divorce remains one of the main contributors to poverty among women and children. Jesus demonstrates care and compassion for those who are vulnerable and suffering.

“Jesus, is it wrong to divorce?” This is the wrong question. The Gospel is very categorical in its message: “Let no one separate what God has joined”. This helps us to believe in the holiness and importance of marriage that God put together. Also, to believe in the unconditional care and healing of the weak, including those who have been broken by divorce.

The church has a word of grace to preach on this painful topic of divorce. Maybe there are a lot of broken people from broken relationships who need to hear the consoling voice of a loving God and a loving community.

Saturday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time / Optional Memorial of Saint Faustina Kowalska, virgin

Luke 10: 13-16
Repent of our ecological sins

Today marks the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1979, St. Pope John Paul II designated St. Francis as the patron saint of ecology. Today also signifies the conclusion of the annual observance of the month-long Season of Creation. The Season of Creation is a collaborative celebration of prayer and action to nurture the environment in which we reside.

In the Gospel today, Jesus rebukes the cities of Chorazin and Bethsaida for their lack of repentance despite witnessing His mighty works. This passage invites us to reflect on our own response to God’s presence and action in the world, especially in the context of creation. Have we become indifferent to the damage we are inflicting on the environment? Do we hear the call to repentance for our role in the ongoing ecological crisis?

Interestingly, Jesus rebuked Chorazin for their lack of response to his mighty works, implying that he did many works there. However, in the gospels, Chorazin is never even mentioned as a place of Jesus’ activity, and we do not know anything about what Jesus did or spoke there. This highlights how much we still have to learn about Jesus’s life. It reminds us that the gospels are not biographies but only glimpses into his life.

St. Francis teaches us a path of conversion, not only in our hearts but also in how we live harmoniously with nature. As we conclude the Season of Creation, we are reminded that caring for the Earth is not an optional task but an integral part of our faith. Our renewed commitment to protect God’s creation acknowledges that in doing so, we honour the Creator Himself.

May this feast and the close of this sacred season inspire us to repent of our ecological sins and embrace a life of stewardship, gratitude, and care for the world around us.

Coffee with God: 3 October 2024

Thursday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time

Luke 10: 1-12
The Mission

Today’s Gospel passage mentions that “the Lord appointed seventy men and sent them out in twos ahead of him into every town and place where he intended to go.” The number seventy held symbolic significance for the Jews: it represented the elders chosen to assist Moses in leading and directing the people in the wilderness (Numbers 11:16-17; Numbers 11:24-25), as well as the number of the Sanhedrin, the supreme council of the Jews. This connection suggests that the seventy men were intended to serve as helpers of Jesus in his mission.

It’s interesting to note that one of the towns where Jesus pronounced woe is Chorazin. It’s implied that Jesus did many mighty works there. However, in the gospels, Chorazin is never even mentioned as a place of Jesus’ activity, and we do not know anything about what Jesus did or spoke there. This highlights how much we still have to learn about the life of Jesus. It reminds us that the gospels are not biographies but only glimpses into his life.

This passage highlights some essential guidelines for participating in Jesus’ mission: Material possessions should not weigh down the preacher; he should travel lightly and not be entangled in worldly things. The preacher should focus on his mission and not be distracted by trivial matters.

The disciples are sent in twos, which shows that the Gospel is not entrusted to the creativity of an individual but is the result of collective effort. Whoever speaks on behalf of Christ does not act independently but is in unity with fellow believers. The initial evangelists following Jesus’ ascension—Peter and John (Acts 8:14), Paul and Barnabas (Acts 13:1)—made it a point to travel in pairs, never alone.

Praying to the Lord of the harvest is not merely a request for more workers, but a transformative process for the disciple. Prayer provides stability, a positive attitude, and inner peace; it humbles the disciples, helping them conquer opposition, setbacks, and failures. It reveals, step by step, the intentions of the ‘Lord of the harvest,’ empowering the disciples and strengthening their spiritual resolve.
