Friday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Luke 17:26-37
Today is Friday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time. The passage from the holy Gospel according to Luke continues to present to us Jesus’ discourse on the end times. Let us try to understand.
The generation in which we now live, like the times of Noah (cf. Gen 6:9—7:22) and Lot (cf. Gen 19:1-29), is filled with all kinds of evil and inappropriate thoughts. For example: men and women marry because of common interests, rather than out of true love for each other; another example: people born of flesh and blood often seek to accumulate more wealth for themselves in this world; also, like those who love luxury and feasting, they pursue everything of this world and seek absolute power belonging to this world. For in their view, possessing everything of this world means possessing the whole of this world, so that in life they forget God who created and governs this world, living under the authority of “the ruler of this world” (cf. John 14:30-31), and are at risk of perdition at every moment.
Although we have all received baptism, having crucified the old self, which bears the mark of death, with Christ, so that the sinful self has perished and we are no longer slaves to sin. But in fact, our enemy—the devil, like a roaring lion, prowls around seeking someone to devour (cf. 1 Pet 5:8). Those most easily devoured by the devil are those who regard everything they now possess as a treasure, and even though they will soon leave this world, still want to keep everything of this world. Therefore, let us keep firmly in mind the teaching of Jesus: On that day, the one on the housetop and his belongings in the house, let him not go down to get them; likewise, the one in the field, let him not turn back to what he left behind (cf. Luke 17:31). Let us keep firmly in mind the example of Lot’s wife, who, when leaving the city of Sodom, because she looked back longingly at everything she once possessed, became a pillar of salt (cf. Luke 17:32; Gen 19:15-26). Let us, through fervent prayer, keep our hearts always in tune with the Heart of Jesus Christ, full of longing for the happiness of eternal life, and live this present life well.
Finally, let us together offer prayer to God:
Almighty and merciful God,
graciously keep from us all adversity,
so that, unhindered in mind and body alike,
we may pursue in freedom of heart
the things that are yours.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
