Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 15:1-10

Today is Friday of the Thirty-first Week in Ordinary Time. The passage from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke continues to present to us Jesus’ teaching to His disciples during His journey to Jerusalem. In this teaching, Jesus instructs us on how to use wealth wisely. Let us try to understand.

We often hear in major newspapers or in the alleys of our neighborhoods people talking about a certain official who, due to serious violations of discipline and law, is under investigation by the disciplinary inspection commission or supervision commission. We also often hear within the Church rumors that a certain cleric has been reassigned by his diocese for squandering the parish’s property. All of this, in fact, does not help at all with the salvation of our souls, nor does it provide any nourishment for our souls. For at such times, we look at these matters with the eyes of the children of this world, often secretly rejoicing at the “misfortune” of others, yet not grieving that our own souls remain mired in sin.

Sometimes, like the dishonest steward, we ignore the revelation God gives us in our lives, living in luxury and dissipation. When our earthly life comes to an end, God will be like the rich man, calling us to account for our management of all His assets (cf. Lk 16:1-2). At that time, our enemy—the devil—will accuse us before God of our wasteful living. Because of our unfaithfulness, we will forfeit the blessedness that God had prepared for us from the foundation of the world, which He would have bestowed upon us for our holy life in this passing world (cf. Mt 25:34-40). Our soul and body will then dwell with our enemy—the devil—in eternal darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Therefore, let us not forget that when we received the Baptism of Christ, we were already washed clean of original sin in the water from Christ’s sacred side, died with Christ so as to be united with Him, that we might begin a new life in Christ through the Christ of the glorious Resurrection. Let us not forget that after Christ’s Ascension, we received the anointing of the Holy Spirit from the hands of sacred ministers, sent by Him. Thus, together with all our brothers and sisters who have received the Holy Spirit, we share in Christ’s eternal divine life, and in His offices of King, Priest, and Prophet. No longer are we called children of this world, but children of light. Since we are children of light, we must act as children of light, making good use of the graces God has bestowed upon us, and doing what is pleasing to God.

Almighty and merciful God,
by whose gift your faithful offer you
right and praiseworthy service,
grant, we pray,
that we may hasten without stumbling
to receive the things you have promised.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever
