Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Luke 1: 26-38
A Mother’s Call to Renewed Faith and Hope

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe reminds us that God’s providence never ceases.

Through Mary, He manifests His tenderness and mercy in moments of great need, revealing His deep care for humanity. As Saint Paul writes in Galatians 4:4, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.” Through Mary, the Eternal One entered our world, becoming “God-with-us” to walk alongside us in love and solidarity.

Nearly five centuries ago, in a time of upheaval in the Americas, God sent Mary to Tepeyac as the Mother of the “true God for whom we live.” She came not to exclude but to embrace all people, especially the poor and forgotten, with her motherly presence and consolation. Her apparition to Saint Juan Diego transformed a fractured world into fertile ground for the Gospel. Through her tender care, she brought dignity and hope to the oppressed.

Today, as we face the rumblings of war, injustice, and suffering, Mary continues to set out “in haste,” inviting us to trust in her Son and to abandon fear and indifference. She calls us to fraternity, urging us to reach out to the forgotten and discarded in our communities. Like Mary, we are called to act swiftly, with love and courage, to embody the Gospel.

As we journey toward the fifth centennial of the Guadalupian apparition, let us renew our commitment to Christ through Our Lady of Guadalupe. She desires to stay with us, guide us in becoming credible witnesses of Christ’s love, and build a culture of care and inclusion.

May Our Lady of Guadalupe lead us to her Son, that we may live with joy, hope, and peace, proclaiming: “Maranata! Come, Lord Jesus!”

Matthew 11: 25-30
Come and Rest: Embracing Christ’s Gentle Wisdom”

Jesus offers an invitation that reveals the heart of His mission: “Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.” Pope Francis emphasises this verse as a beacon of hope for the tired and marginalised, urging us to accept Christ’s simplicity and humility.

Jesus begins by praising the Father for revealing divine truths to “little ones” rather than the “wise and learned.” In this, the pope highlights a clear preference for the poor and humble, whose hearts are open to the wisdom of the Kingdom. The learned, constrained by their pride and arrogance, often fail to grasp the liberating message of Jesus. True understanding requires childlike trust and openness, which invite us to rest in God’s love.

The invitation to find rest in Christ speaks to all who are burdened by life’s struggles, whether from societal expectations, personal failures, or spiritual exhaustion. Pope Francis reminds us that Jesus does not impose oppressive demands. Instead, He offers a relationship rooted in gentleness and compassion. His yoke is light because it is borne in love and shared with others in community.

Christ’s “gentle and humble heart” stands in stark contrast to the rigidity of religious leaders who burdened the people with endless laws. Pope Francis calls on us to reject pride and instead embody Christ’s tenderness in our own lives. By doing so, we transform our communities into places of rest and renewal for others.

This passage challenges us to trust in the wisdom of God and to reflect it in our actions. When we come to Christ, we not only find rest for our souls but also learn to be instruments of His peace for others.

Tuesday of the Second Week of Advent
Or Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Loreto
Matthew 18: 12-14
The Divine folly of love

In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents a striking parable: a shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep on a hillside to search for one that has strayed. To the practical mind, this decision seems reckless. Yet, as Pope Francis often reminds us, this parable unveils the radical, unmeasured love of God—a love that defies human logic.

Pope Francis describes God’s love as “restless.” It doesn’t wait for the lost sheep to return but ventures out into danger, crossing mountains and valleys to find it. This is the heart of the Gospel: God does not measure worth by numbers or practicality. Each soul, no matter how broken or lost, is infinitely valuable.

In his homilies, Pope Francis challenges us to see ourselves as both the lost sheep and the shepherd. As the lost sheep, we are reminded of our need for God’s mercy and the assurance that He never abandons us, no matter how far we stray. He rejoices more over our return than over the others who remain safe—a love that Pope Francis calls “extravagant” and “unfathomable.”

As shepherds, we are urged to embrace this divine absurdity. How frequently do we hold back compassion for those we dislike, those outside our group, or those who challenge us, simply because it feels inconvenient or illogical? Pope Francis warns us against a lukewarm faith that lacks boldness. He urges us to adopt the shepherd’s heart—one that seeks, sacrifices and rejoices in the recovery of the lost.

This parable invites us to trust the God who searches for us with relentless love and embody that love in our relationships. May we learn to rejoice in finding the lost and to embrace the “folly” of divine love.

Solemnity – Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Luke 1: 26-38
The God Who Speaks to the Humble

Today, the Gospel reminds us that God unveils Himself not in majesty or positions of authority but among the humble—those who earnestly seek Him with faith and a pure heart. Luke’s Gospel, deeply anchored in Jewish tradition, illustrates this through the stories of Mary, Zechariah, and Elizabeth, who, despite their modest backgrounds, were chosen to receive God’s remarkable promises.

Mary is the epitome of humility and faith. The angel’s announcement was made not in a temple or palace but in the obscure town of Nazareth. Despite her initial fear, Mary embraced God’s plan, saying, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Her response is a model of openness to God’s transformative power, even in the face of impossibility.

Luke contrasts this with the scepticism of Zechariah in the Temple. Where one expected faith—the centre of religious life—there was doubt. Yet, God’s word is not confined by human disbelief. The birth of John to the barren Elizabeth demonstrates that “nothing is impossible with God.”

This Advent, we are invited to emulate Mary’s attitude: to trust in God’s promises even amid a world that feels hostile to His revelation. Look around—who are the poor and lowly who live with unshakable faith in God’s providence? They are the marginalised in our communities, the forgotten, or even those in our midst who quietly serve in faith.

Let us rejoice, for the Lord is near! May our souls magnify the Lord, and like Mary, may we say, “Yes,” to His will, trusting that He fulfils His promises in His perfect time. Amen.
