The Sixth Day in the Octave of Christmas
Luke 2:36-40
Witnessing Faith in Everyday Life
In Luke’s Gospel, the opening chapters weave a tapestry of hope cantered on God’s promises in John and Jesus. These passages radiate praise with canticles sung by Mary, Zechariah, angels, and Simeon. Also present is Anna, a prophetess whose life offers lessons for Catholics today.
Anna’s story exemplifies unwavering faith. After being widowed just seven years into her marriage, she dedicated decades to the Temple, serving God through prayer and fasting. Her life reflects the quiet, steadfast devotion seen in many of our communities today. How many of us are acquainted with individuals, especially among elderly women, who commit their lives to prayer and acts of service? Like Anna, they represent perseverance and hope, providing a compelling testament to God’s faithfulness.
Upon encountering the child Jesus, Anna recognizes Him as the Savior. This moment compels us to perceive with the eyes of faith. Within the ordinary—a child in His mother’s arms—Anna discerns the extraordinary. How frequently do we overlook the presence of God in the mundane facets of our lives? Anna’s insight urges us to pause, reflect, and discern the divine presence in our everyday experiences.
The passage concludes with Jesus returning to Nazareth, where He matures in wisdom, age, and grace. These words remind us of the profound mystery of the Incarnation: the Son of God inhabiting an ordinary human existence. He partakes in the joys and challenges of familial and communal life. Development in wisdom is attained through living, learning, and interacting with others. Advancement in grace is derived from acknowledging God’s presence and responding to His invitation.
Like Anna, may we live with eyes of faith, perceiving God’s work in our lives and sharing His love with those around us. As we grow in wisdom, age, and grace, let us proclaim God’s salvation and wonders to all we encounter.
