John 15:18-21
Guarded Against the Spirit of the World

In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns His disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first” (Jn 15:18). As He prepares to leave them, He prays not that they be taken out of the world, but that they be protected from the world’s spirit (cf. Jn 17:15).

What is this spirit of the world? It is not merely about enjoying parties or pleasures. Rather, it is a deeper, more dangerous culture — a culture of appearances, of superficial values, of fleeting loyalties. It is a way of life that prizes convenience over truth, discards what is uncomfortable, and resists fidelity. It disguises itself with charm, but at its root, it suffocates the Word of God, as Jesus warns in the parable of the Sower (cf. Lk 8:7).

“Worldliness even penetrates the Church, masquerading as good while draining away the Gospel’s radical call to love, sacrifice, and truth. Henri de Lubac calls this “spiritual worldliness” the worst evil that can befall the Church — subtle, deep-rooted, and devastating.

Pope Francis had cautioned us that “True Christianity, however, stands on the scandal of the Cross. The world cannot tolerate the Cross because it reveals love that sacrifices and suffers for the sake of others. As St. Paul reminds us, “The victory that conquers the world is our faith”(1 Jn 5:4) — faith in Christ crucified and risen, foolishness to the worldly mind, but the power of God for those who believe.

In these final days of Easter, let us ask the Holy Spirit for discernment: to recognise the spirit of worldliness and to resist it with the strength of faith. May we hold fast to the Cross of Christ, our true hope and lasting victory.

Faith in the Crucified and Risen Lord is our shield against the spirit of the world.

John 15: 12-17
Called to Friendship with Jesus

Today, Jesus speaks to the Apostles — and to us: “I do not call you servants any longer, but friends” (Jn 15:15).

Throughout the Bible, many great figures — Moses, David, Elijah, Mary — were called “servants” of God, entrusted with sacred missions. However, when it comes to the New Testament, Jesus reveals something even greater: For him, the disciples are no more “servants”; He desires friendship with us, a bond characterised by affection, trust, and a shared existence.

Friendship is a deep human experience. We see children, share their toys with those whom they consider as friends; as teenagers, we share our secrets; as adults, we share our struggles and joys. True friendship is born not out of calculation, but out of recognition — seeing something of ourselves in another. It endures beyond mistakes, offering forgiveness instead of abandonment. “A friend loves at all times,” Proverbs 17:17 reminds us.

Jesus is this Friend — the One who knows our weaknesses and still entrusts us with His heart. He shares with us everything He has received from the Father. He calls us dear, beloved, beyond our merits, inviting us to abide in His love without fear.

Today, let us ask ourselves: What face does Jesus have for me? A distant stranger, or a true friend? Do I welcome His love, and do I reflect His friendship to others — especially to those in need of forgiveness and mercy?

The heart of Christian life is not mere duty, but a joyful friendship with the living Lord. It is a relationship that transforms us and sends us out to build bonds of love wherever we go.
May Mary, the faithful friend of God, help us grow each day in friendship with her Son, and spread His love to the world.

Jesus calls you His friend — remain in His love, and share it freely.

Abide in My Love: A Pilgrimage of the Heart

Love is the very heart of life. Jesus invites us to abide in his love, because only by loving can we experience true joy and fullness of life. Yet, love is not always easy. Our relationships often reveal how easily jealousy, anger, and selfishness can creep into our hearts.

Love cannot be compelled or forced; it needs to be given willingly. This is why the Words of Jesus today pose a challenge before us: “If you want to remain in my love, keep my commandments.” While Jesus loves us without conditions, He encourages us to respond freely. Holding onto resentment or hatred sets us apart from the nurturing love that he provides.

Abiding in Jesus’ love is not a passive act. It requires daily effort — choosing forgiveness over bitterness, sacrifice over selfishness, and compassion over indifference. True love is a sweet burden, calling us to grow in patience, mercy, and trust.

The early Church, as seen in the Acts of the Apostles, faced many divisions and trials. Yet, it was through Christ-like understanding and persistent love that they found unity and strength. Today, we are called to the same path, especially in a world wounded by war, hatred, and mistrust.

To walk this pilgrimage of hope means choosing love daily, forgiving generously, and keeping our hearts open to others’ needs. It is a journey that demands perseverance, but it leads to the deep joy that Christ promises.

As we abide in Jesus, His life flows through us like the sap of a vine, bearing fruits of peace, justice, and joy. In a world thirsting for hope, our choice to love becomes a powerful testimony. Abide in his love, we will become living signs of hope for the world.

John 15:1-8
Bearing the fruits of hope in a fragile world

Jesus tells us, “Remain in me, as I remain in you” (Jn 15:4). Using the image of the vine and branches, He teaches that our life and fruitfulness depend entirely on staying united with Him. Without Him, we dry up; with Him, we flourish. The Father’s patient love, like a wise vintner’s care, nourishes us so that we may bear fruits of joy, justice, and hope.

In a world struggling with isolation, environmental decay, and fragile human relationships, Christ invites us on a pilgrimage of hope. Our lives are immersed in the springs of God’s love. This divine sap, first given to us at Baptism, must be safeguarded with tender care.

Pope Francis had proposed the following guidelines in our journey as Pilgrims of Hope: He gives four points:
• Remain in prayer, continuously drawing strength from Christ, the True Vine.
• Remain in the Word, allowing the Word of God to influence every decision.
• Remain in love, supporting the marginalised and nurturing our shared environment.
• Remain in community, building bridges where division and loneliness threaten.

To abide in Christ means not to remain stagnant, the Pope explained — it’s a process of growth, progression, and testimony. His presence within us yields a fruit that revitalises the world: not bitter grapes, but the delightful wine of joy, the wine of hope.

The beauty of the Lord’s creation must be protected, and so must the gift of faith. Let us be branches full of life, bringing Gospel fruits wherever we are planted! Remain in Christ — and your life will overflow with the wine of hope the world thirsts for!
