Love Your Enemies: The Christian Call to Perfection

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges us: “Love your enemies.” This isn’t just about loving those who love us—it’s about embracing a supernatural love that involves prayer, forgiveness, and letting go of past hurts. Philosopher Schopenhauer argued that suffering comes from our insatiable desires, which often lead to harm. As Christians, our desire should be for eternal life instead of fleeting worldly desires. Loving our enemies is difficult, but it’s a process we must commit to each day.

Jesus also calls us to pray for those who hurt us. We live in a world where toxic environments—be it in relationships or workplaces—can destroy our peace and faith. In such situations, it’s important to recognise when it’s time to leave or let go, trusting in God’s plan. Prayer gives us the strength to forgive and move forward, even when it’s challenging.

To be perfect, as Jesus commands, is not about flawless behaviour but about striving each day to align our actions with God’s will. Perfection is found in becoming a better person, facing challenges with love and patience, and trusting in God’s guidance. It’s about showing kindness, especially when it’s hard.

In our surroundings, discrimination and hatred are all too common. But Jesus calls us to love without conditions and to embrace all people, regardless of race, gender, or social status. Pope Francis beautifully sums this up: “The mystery of Christian life is loving our enemies and praying for our persecutors.” If we followed this teaching, the world would be a place of peace and unity. Let us ask ourselves: how far are we willing to go to be perfect like our Father? To love without boundaries?

Friday of the First Week of Lent
Matthew 5:20-26
Be reconciled!

Today’s Gospel offers a reminder about the inseparable link between our relationship with God and with one another. Jesus teaches that fraternal love is foundational to our faith. The Scribes and Pharisees believed that strict adherence to the Mosaic Law was the only way to draw near to God.

This mindset still exists today in our Church communities. Many people are more concerned with whether an action, like eating meat on Fridays during Lent, is a sin or not. Focusing only on avoiding sin can lead us to fear God’s punishment rather than embracing His love. This kind of legalistic thinking reduces God to a figure of a strict judge, always watching for our mistakes.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus confronts this limited perspective. He explains that the commandment against killing not only forbids the act itself but also urges us to steer clear ofhatred, anger, and even damaging words. Physical murder is merely the outward expression of a deeper spiritual violence originating from the heart. How often do we approach God’saltar during Mass while holding onto anger or unresolved conflicts with others?

The Word of God warns us that anger when left unchecked, can lead to deeper harm. Before we approach the Eucharist, we must first seek reconciliation with our brothers and sisters. The Mass itself is a moment of reconciliation, beginning with the act of contrition and continuing through the sign of peace. But how often do we let the sign of peace become a hollow gesture, lacking true meaning? Let us restore its depth and truly be reconciled with one another so that we can truly share in the Body and Blood of Christ.

Thursday of the First Week in Lent
Matthew 7:7-12
A Journey of Prayer and Transformation

Lent is a sacred season during which we are invited to deepen our relationship with God and seek a genuine change of heart. Today’s Gospel teaches us to ask, seek, and knock to discern God’s will in our lives.

Asking in Prayer is our lifeline to God, an unceasing dialogue that acknowledges our dependence on Him. Through prayer of petition, we present our needs and desires before the Lord, trusting in His divine providence. Let us approach Him with sincerity for the grace to grow in holiness.

True change begins with self-awareness. Our weaknesses can either defeat us or become a path to strength when we surrender to God’s mercy. The Gospel calls us to reject sin and embrace the light of Christ.

Just as a well-cooked meal takes time, authentic change requires patience and perseverance in taking concrete steps toward holiness, trusting that God’s grace will sustain us.
Difficulties arise, but every struggle is an opportunity for growth. At first, we may stumble, blaming others or ignoring our faults. Over time, with God’s grace, we recognise our responsibility, resist temptation, and eventually choose a new path altogether. Every fall can lead to a greater resurrection if we allow God to work within us.

Our Christian life calls us to integrity, prudence, resistance to complacency, and striving to live with purpose, always seeking ways to serve and love others. Lent is a reminder that we have much to offer. By embracing prayer, transformation, and virtue, we journey toward Easter with renewed hearts, ready to receive the joy of the Resurrection.

Wednesday of the First Week in Lent
Luke 11: 29-32
Lent is a time of conversion- Sign of Jonah

As we journey through this sacred season of Lent, we are reminded that it is a time of conversion, renewal, and transformation. The Gospel speaks of the Sign of Jonah as a call to repentance and change. In the same way, Jesus calls us today to turn back to God with sincerity and courage.

The people of Nineveh did not ignore the warning; instead, they humbled themselves, fasted, and sought God’s mercy. In contrast, Jesus rebuked the people of his time for seeking more signs, even though he himself was the greatest sign—God’s presence among them.

Too often, we become lukewarm, resisting real change. The danger is not just sin itself but our indifference—convincing ourselves that everything is fine even when we know we need to change. The Ninevites teach us that we waste no time to return to God with sincere hearts.

What signs is God sending into our life today? Sometimes, they come as struggles, sometimes as moments of grace, but all of them invite us to conversion. The people of Nineveh responded with fasting, prayer, and humility. This Lent, let us examine our conscience, recognise our faults, and take action to grow closer to God.

The Ninevites had to change their ways, and their conversion was not just for a moment but a commitment to live differently. Our journey of conversion is like a daily battle—we fall, we struggle, but we must rise again and keep moving forward in holiness.

Lent is our time to respond—to repent, believe, and renew our hearts. Let us not waste this season of grace but embrace it with open hearts, knowing that our ultimate goal is Heaven.
