Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord
Luke 1:26-38
FIAT

Two years ago, on this day of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, Pope Francis consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, imploring peace for the suffering people. Let us continue to pray for peace in these war-torn nations.

The Gospel of Luke presents the encounter between the Angel Gabriel and Mary, highlighting God’s loving plan for humanity. Though Luke was not an eyewitness, he conveys Mary’s unique role as the Beloved of God, chosen to bear the Saviour. In Nazareth, she was simply known as Mary, but in Heaven, she was the favoured one, chosen to bring God’s plan to fulfilment.

Mary’s self-identification as the Handmaid of the Lord holds deep significance. This title, reserved in the Old Testament for great figures like Moses, David, and the prophets, speaks of the unwavering fidelity to God’s will. Though it was never before attributed to a woman, the early Christian community recognised that no one embodied this title more perfectly than Mary. Her humble yet dignified acceptance echoes her complete trust in God’s plan.

Her response, “Let it be done to me as you have said” (v. 38b), expresses not mere resignation but joyful willingness. Eager to see God’s plan realised, Mary sets aside her personal dreams, placing her life entirely in God’s hands.

Wherever God enters, joy follows. The Annunciation begins with the angel’s invitation to ‘rejoice’ and culminates in Mary’s joyful surrender. God longs to dwell among us and desires our happiness. Mary’s example is the perfect model of faith and obedience.

As we journey through Lent, may Mary’s fiat inspire us to surrender to God’s will with joy and trust. Let us open our hearts to His plan, knowing that His presence always brings peace and fulfilment.

Coffee with God: March 24, 2025

Monday of the Third Week of Lent
Luke 4:24-30
The God of small things!

During our Lenten journey, the Gospel encourages us to contemplate our human inclination toward indignation. The people of Nazareth and Naaman from the Scriptures exemplify this response when confronted with God’s simplicity. Although initially astonished by Jesus’ message, the people of Nazareth quickly erupted in anger when they realised, he was preaching a God different from the one they had been familiar with. They thought, they knew him too well. This contempt drove them to violence, ultimately rejecting the divine presence among them.

Similarly, Naaman, although open to faith, reacted with anger when the prophet Elisha instructed him to bathe in the Jordan to be healed. He expected a grand gesture, rather than the simplicity of God’s command (cf. 2 Kings 5:10-12). Both stories reveal how pride and the desire for the extraordinary can blind us to God’s presence in everyday life.

God operates in simplicity, often through our daily tasks, quiet prayers, and small acts of kindness. In contrast, worldly temptations lure us to pursue grandeur while dismissing the humble. This prideful indignation may result in violence, expressed through harsh words or harmful deeds. Such attitudes separate us from God, who engages with us in the everyday moments of life.

Lent calls us to rediscover the beauty of simplicity. God reveals Himself in the hidden, gentle ways that invite us to humility. Let us ask for the grace to recognise His presence in the simple things — in the silence of prayer, the kindness of others, and the quiet work of His Spirit within us.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, who lived in the simplicity of Nazareth, guide us to trust in God’s gentle ways. Let us reject the pride that leads to indignation and violence and instead walk the path of humility and peace.

Coffee with God: March 23, 2025

Third Sunday of Lent Year C
Luke 13:1-9
Is God punishing us?

At the heart of our Lenten journey, the Gospel invites us to reflect on how we perceive suffering and God’s role in it. In Luke 13, Jesus addresses the tragic deaths of Galileans and those crushed by a falling tower. The people wonder if these tragedies were divine punishments, a question that echoes through the ages. When faced with suffering, we too may ask: Is God punishing us? Why does He allow such pain?

Jesus firmly rejects the idea of a vengeful God. Evil and suffering do not come from God, for He is a merciful Father who always seeks our good. The psalmist reminds us, “He does not deal with us according to our sins” (Psalm 103:10). The true enemy is sin—the selfishness and wrong choices that harm our relationships and the world around us. Lent calls on us to turn away from sin and embrace the logic of the Gospel, where love and fraternity triumph over evil.

Yet, conversion is not easy. We may grow discouraged by our repeated failures. To encourage us, Jesus offers the parable of the barren fig tree. Though the tree bears no fruit, the owner does not cut it down but gives it more time to flourish. This parable reveals God’s infinite patience. He is the God of second chances, always offering us another opportunity to return to Him.

God believes in us, walks beside us, and nurtures our growth with mercy and tenderness. His gaze is fixed not on our past mistakes but on the fruits we can still bear. This Lenten season, let us embrace God’s patience, seek His forgiveness, and trust in His loving plan. May the Blessed Virgin Mary accompany us on this journey, filling us with hope and courage as we strive for true conversion.

Saturday of the Second Week of Lent

Luke 15: 1-3; 11-22
Mercy

In Luke 15, Jesus presents three parables of mercy: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. Each story reveals the boundless love and mercy of God, but the parable of the prodigal son particularly highlights the compassionate heart of the Father. This father is a powerful image of God, who respects our freedom, even when it leads us away from Him. Although the son chooses a path of sin, the father’s love never wavers. He waits patiently, watching for his son’s return, demonstrating that God’s mercy is always available to us.

The father’s acceptance of his rebellious son illustrates that no transgression is beyond God’s forgiveness. His love doesn’t depend on our flawlessness; instead, it stems from His boundless mercy. The joyous reception of the son, free from judgment, serves as a reminderthat God rejoices over every sinner who turns back to Him. This occasion encourages us to place our trust in the sacrament of reconciliation, through which God’s love renews our dignity and grants us a new beginning.

The older son represents those who struggle with self-righteousness, forgetting that God’s mercy is for all. The father’s gentle reminder—that everything he has belongs to both sons—calls us to let go of pride and share in the joy of forgiveness. Whether we see ourselves in the younger or older son, the message is the same: God seeks both the lost and the self-assured, offering His mercy to all.

During this Lenten season, we are invited to return to the Father’s loving embrace. Let us reject sin, seek reconciliation, and allow God’s mercy to renew our hearts. With the help of Mary, Mother of Mercy, may we draw closer to God, who never tires of forgiving and welcoming us home.
