Coffee with God: April 4, 2025

Friday of the Fourth Week of Lent
Or Optional Memorial Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
John 7:1-2,10,25-30
The Word of God is not chained

As we draw near to Holy Week, today’s Gospel reminds us of the growing tension surrounding Jesus’ mission. Jesus moves carefully, even secretly, into Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. Despite the threats against Him, Jesus speaks openly in the Temple because the Word of God cannot remain silent.

There are moments in life when silence is wisdom. Jesus Himself remained silent before His accusers during His Passion. But when it was time to proclaim truth and invite people into the light, He spoke boldly. This is what we see in today’s Gospel. People were confused about Jesus—they thought they knew him, but they did not understand His true origins. They judged by appearances, not by truth.

In today’s world, there remains confusion about the true identity of Jesus. Many assert they know Him but lack genuine belief. To truly understand Jesus, we need to revisit the Scriptures, engage with them through reading and prayer, and let His Word speak within our hearts.

Lent offers a sacred chance to deepen our connection with the living Word. Reflecting on the suffering Jesus faced, we also recognise the struggles Christians endure today—some experience intense persecution, while others face minor daily challenges and misunderstandings stemming from their faith in the Gospel. In all of this, we are called to remain faithful witnesses, sometimes speaking with courage, and sometimes remaining silent, entrusting everything to God.

Lord Jesus, help us to know You more deeply and to bear witness to Your truth in our lives. May Your Word live in us and through us.Amen.

Thursday of the Fourth Week of Lent
John 5, 31-47
Faith is not part-time

As Holy Week draws near, the Church calls us to refresh our hearts and recommit to the promises made on Ash Wednesday. In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses those who remain sceptical of Him despite the abundant evidence. He provides four witnesses: John the Baptist, His own works and miracles, God the Father, and the Scriptures. Nonetheless, many continue to refuse belief.

Decades after the resurrection, early Christians were facing persecution. John writes to encourage them—and us—to continue believing in Jesus, even when faith is challenged.

Jesus points out the real reason many people reject Him: fear and pride. The Jewish leaders of His time were afraid of losing power and status. Accepting Jesus meant letting go of their own glory to seek the glory that comes from God alone. The same struggle continues today. Many people close themselves to Christ for fear of the change that the Gospel would demand. We are so familiar with the commands of the Lord to love even our enemies or sell all that we have and to give to the poor. However, we fail to accept that teaching for the fear of change it would demand!

This Lent, we are called to re-read the Scriptures in light of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The Lord is present in our suffering, in the rejected, and in those who work for peace and justice. How can we profess our faith in the Lord, not just when it’s convenient, but every day?

Faith is not part-time. It’s a way of life. Let us not be afraid to open our hearts and testify to the truth of Christ’s love. Lord, deepen our faith and help us to live as faithful witnesses of your love. Amen.

Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Lent
John 5:17-30
For the Greater Glory of God

Jesus responds to criticism for healing on the Sabbath by saying, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work.” His words reveal the deep unity between Himself and the Father. Jesus’ life is not about self-promotion or popularity, but about obedience and love for the Father.

This is an invitation for us to reflect on how we live our own lives. In a world obsessed with recognition and personal achievement, Jesus reminds us that the greatest dignity comes not from being noticed, but from doing the will of God. Like Jesus, we are called to live for the Father’s glory, not for our own. As Saint Paul reminds us: “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17).

Jesus also tells us today that the Father has entrusted Him with giving life and passing judgment. He gives life to those who hear His voice and believe in Him. As followers of Christ, we are called to be people who give life. Through our work, our vocation, and our daily actions, we have a mission to bring hope and encouragement to others. Holiness doesn’t just happen in churches; it happens in the ordinary tasks of each day, when we work with love and integrity.

Finally, Jesus reminds us that there will be judgment. Our choices matter. Do we live for ourselves, or do we live for God? Today is a chance to renew our focus: to work not for our own fame, but for the glory of God; to be people who give life, not take it away.

Lord Jesus, help us to work for your glory alone. May our lives reflect your love and give life to those around us. Amen.

Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Lent
John 5:1-3,5-16
“Do You Want to Be Healed?”

In today’s Gospel (John 5:1-3, 5-16), Jesus encounters a man who has been sick for thirty-eight years, lying by the pool of Bethesda. When Jesus asks him, “Do you want to be healed?”, the man doesn’t say yes. Instead, he complains: “I have no one to put me into the pool…” He blames others for his situation and seems trapped in a cycle of discouragement and self-pity.

Yet Jesus, in His mercy, heals him anyway. “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” And immediately the man is made well. But even after his healing, his reaction is striking—there is no gratitude or joy. He simply shifts the focus: “The one who healed me told me to do it.” Later, he reports Jesus to the authorities.

How often do we act like this man? We stay in the same place spiritually, emotionally, even physically, blaming others for our situation. Jesus invites us to healing, but we hesitate, making excuses instead of responding with faith.

Lent is a time when the Church asks each of us: “Do you want to be healed?” It is an invitation to renew our Baptismal promises and allow the waters of life—grace—to stir our hearts. But healing requires a decision: to get up, to pick up our mats, and to walk in faith.

Let’s examine our hearts. Are we stuck in the apathy of complaining and excuses? Jesus calls us today to rise from our paralysis, to embrace His mercy, and to live with gratitude and joy.

Lord Jesus, heal our hearts. Stir the waters of our souls. Give us the courage to say yes, and to walk with You in newness of life. Amen.
