Called to be witnesses

In today’s liturgy, the word “witness” appears twice: first, in Peter’s bold proclamation after healing the paralytic, declaring, “You killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses” (Acts 3:15). The second time, Jesus Himself commissions His disciples, saying, “You are witnesses to these things” (Lk 24:48). The Apostles, having encountered the Risen Lord, could not remain silent. They shared their experience so that the truth of Christ’s Resurrection would reach all people.

This mission did not end with them. As baptized Christians, we are all called to be witnesses to the living Christ. But what does it mean to be a witness? A witness sees, recalls, and tells. Seeing does not mean looking with mere physical eyes but recognizing the profound truth of Christ’s presence. Recalling means allowing the experience of faith to shape our hearts and minds. And telling is not merely recounting an event but proclaiming, with conviction and joy, how Jesus has transformed our lives. A true witness does not speak in indifference but with a heart changed by Christ’s love.

Our faith is not a set of rules or abstract theories; it is a personal relationship with Jesus, the Risen Lord. We come to know him through his Gospel, the sacred scriptures, the sacraments, and the life of the Church. Through the grace of Baptism, the nourishment of the Eucharist, and the renewal of our hearts in confession, we are equipped to share his love.

When we focus only on ourselves or turn a blind eye to the struggles of others, we miss the chance to show the world our faith in Christ and the values of discipleship. However, by leading lives filled with joy, courage, mercy, and peace, we can shine a light on the incredible love of Christ. Let’s ask for Mary, our Mother, to guide and support us, so we can joyfully share the blessings of the Risen Lord with everyone we encounter. Amen.

從信仰的角度重新解讀我們的生活

今天的福音經文講述了復活的耶穌和前往厄瑪烏的兩個門徒相遇的故事。他們因祂的死感到沮喪，帶著悲傷和不確定，離開耶路撒冷。儘管耶穌與他們同行，他們卻沒有認出祂來。祂詢問他們感到悲傷的緣由，耐心聆聽他們講述最近發生的事。接著，祂説明他們根據聖經，重新詮釋他們的體驗，把他們的悲傷化為理解。

我們和門徒一樣，經常與失望，未解之迷，每日擔負的重擔作鬥爭。但是，耶穌邀請我們去做門徒們所做的事 —— 把一切都告訴祂。祂渴望我們誠實，而非完美的言談。每當我們把我們的喜樂和困苦帶給祂，祂就能重新點燃我們心中的火。

要做成這事，有一種方法是在夜間省察內心。教宗方濟各鼓勵我們提問：今天，我過得怎樣？我在那裡找到了喜樂？我在哪裡感到困苦？有什麼暗藏的恩典能使我稱謝天主？有什麼樣的創傷可以向耶穌交托？通過重讀我們和祂在一起的日子，我們開始用祂的眼睛看待我們的生活，即使身處困境，依舊能發生祂的臨在。

根據基督的啟迪，我們的困苦 —— 不論是沉重的十字架，或是艱難的選擇，或是痛苦的錯誤 —— 都以成為我們成長的道路。但是，我們必須敞開心扉，放下我們的戒備，使祂的真理滲透到我們的心中。

讓我們從今天開始，讓我們每天晚上，花費時間與耶穌在一起，與祂分享我們的心事。這樣的話，我們就能如同前往厄瑪烏的門徒一樣，認出祂與我們同行。願明智的童貞聖母瑪利亞，幫助我們按照復活之主的啟迪，重新看待我們的生活。

Luke 24: 13-35
Rereading our lives in the light of faith

The Gospel recounts the encounter between the Risen Jesus and the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Disheartened by His death, they leave Jerusalem, burdened by sadness and uncertainty. Though Jesus walks beside them, they do not recognise Him. He asks about their sorrow and patiently listens as they recount recent events. Then, He helps them reinterpret their experiences in the light of Scripture, transforming their grief into understanding.

Like the disciples, we often struggle with disappointments, unanswered questions, and the weight of our daily burdens. But Jesus invites us to do what the disciples did—tell Him everything. He longs for our honesty, not perfect words. When we bring our joys and struggles to Him, He can rekindle the fire in our hearts.

One way to do this is by practising an evening examination of conscience. Pope Francis encourages us to ask: How was my day? Where did I find joy? Where did I struggle? Were there hidden graces for which to give thanks? Were there wounds to surrender to Jesus? By rereading our day with Him, we begin to see our lives through His eyes, discovering His presence even in difficulties.

In Christ’s light, our struggles—whether a heavy cross, a difficult choice, or a painful mistake—can become paths to growth. But we must be open, setting aside our defences and allowing His truth to penetrate our hearts.

Let us begin today. Let us spend time with Jesus each evening, sharing our hearts with him so that, like the disciples of Emmaus, we may recognise Him walking with us. May Mary, the wise Virgin, help us to see our lives anew in the light of the Risen Lord.

眼淚的恩典：與基督相遇的道路

教宗方濟各教導我們：要尋求眼淚的恩典，這個恩典能軟化我們的心，能使我們準備妥當，與基督相遇。2013年，教宗方濟各就職首年，他在聖瑪律大之家（Domus Sanctae Marthae）的講道中反思福音經文中，瑪利亞·瑪達肋納與復活的主相遇的故事（參看：若20:11-18）她的眼淚不只是悲傷的表達，更是深深之愛的表達。她得到的寬恕越多，她就愛的越多。她的空空的墳墓面前哭泣，不只是反映出她的悲傷，也因那改變她的一生的復活之主不在，感到難受。然而，正是在這黑暗時刻，耶穌向她顯現。

我們如同瑪利亞·瑪達肋納一樣，也會有經驗到希望破滅，迷失或被拋棄的時刻。但是，這些感傷的時刻，可以變成得到恩典的時刻。眼淚淨化了道路，使我們能與天主相遇。它打破了我們堅硬的心，使我們在看似失去一切的境況下，依然能認出基督的臨在。在我們內心至深之處感到困苦的時候，救主時常接近我們，如同呼喚瑪利亞·瑪達肋納一樣，呼喚我們的名字。

瑪利亞的回應：“我看到了主”是信德的徹底見證。雖然我們沒有親眼看見耶穌，但是，我們蒙召用心靈的眼睛認出祂。祂在聖體聖事中，在聖經中，在愛的功行中，在我們內心寧靜的恩典中。

願我們不懼流淚，而是把它們看作與基督相遇的道路。願我們如同瑪利亞·瑪達肋納一樣，為祂生活的臨在作證，滿懷信德宣告：“我看到了救主。”

John 20: 11-18
The Grace of Tears: A Path to Encountering Christ

Pope Francis teaches us to ask for the grace of tears, a gift that softens our hearts and prepares us to see Jesus. In a homily at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in the first year of his Papacy in 2013, he reflected on the Gospel account of Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the Risen Lord (Jn 20:11-18). Her tears were not just expressions of sorrow but also of deep love. Having been forgiven much, she loved much. At the empty tomb, her weeping reflected not only grief but also the aching absence of the One who had transformed her life. Yet it was in this moment of darkness that Jesus revealed Himself to her.

Like Mary Magdalene, we, too, experience moments when our hopes seem shattered, when we feel lost or abandoned. But these moments of sorrow can become moments of grace. Tears purify, making way for divine encounter. They break through the hardness of our hearts, allowing us to recognize Christ’s presence even when all seems lost. It is often in our deepest struggles that the Lord draws near, calling us by name as He did with Mary.

Mary’s response, “I have seen the Lord,” is the ultimate testimony of faith. Even if we do not see Jesus with our eyes, we are called to recognize Him with the eyes of our hearts. He reveals Himself in the Eucharist, in Scripture, in acts of love, and in the quiet stirrings of grace within us.

May we not fear our tears but embrace them as a path to encountering Christ. And may we, like Mary Magdalene, bear witness to His living presence, proclaiming with confidence: “I have seen the Lord.”

復活節八日慶祝期好似一個連續的日子，延展了救主復活的喜樂。今天的福音經文講述的是耶穌在墳墓顯現給兩位婦人（參看：瑪28:8-15）祂與她們相遇，託付給他們兩個訊息，這也是我們應當接納的恩典。

首先，祂說：“不要害怕”恐懼是我們每天都要面對的對手，死亡是根植在我們心中最深的恐懼。我們害怕失去，疾病和不確定性。但是，耶穌戰勝了我們，祂告訴我們：“不要害怕。”祂召叫我們離開經常把自己埋葬，令我們感到恐懼的墳墓。恐懼經常縈繞在我們心中，但是，復活節的清晨提醒我們：鼓起勇氣。耶穌向我們保證：“我為你們受苦，但是，我常和你們在一起。不要害怕。”

我們要怎樣才能克服恐懼的呢？耶穌回答說：“去，告訴我的兄弟姐妹，去加里肋亞；他們要在那裡看到我。”恐懼使我們感到孤獨，但是，耶穌派遣我們去分享喜訊。這些婦人還沒有準備好宣告復活，但是，耶穌把這個訊息託付給他們。只有分享這個訊息，才能增長喜樂。如果我們傳播福音，我們就會敞開心扉，恐懼就會消失。

然而，福音經文也提醒我們留意對抗。那些在墳墓的士兵，他們收受賄賂，傳播謊言。這種受金錢驅使的欺騙，與事實背道而馳。謊言會使人受到腐蝕，使人回到墳墓，但是，復活的主召叫我們進入光明和生命。

讓我們棄絕欺騙的黑暗，把我們隱藏的謊言帶到基督的真光跟前。願瑪利亞，復活之主之母，幫助我們克服恐懼，接納真理，成為福音喜樂的光輝見證人。

Matthew 28:8-15
Do not be afraid

The Easter Octave is like one continuous day, extending the joy of the Resurrection. Today’s Gospel recounts Jesus’ appearance to the women at the tomb (Mt 28:8-15). He greets them and offers two messages—gifts we should embrace.

First, He says, “Do not be afraid.” Fear is a daily adversary rooted in our deepest dread—death itself. We fear loss, illness, and uncertainty. But Jesus, having conquered death, tells us convincingly, “Do not be afraid.” He calls us to leave the tombs of our fears, where we often bury ourselves. Fear lingers in our hearts, yet Easter morning reminds us: Take courage. Jesus assures us, “I have suffered for you, and I am with you forever. Do not be afraid!”

How do we overcome fear? Jesus gives the answer: “Go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee; there they will see me”. Fear isolates us, but Jesus sends us out to share the Good News. The women were not the most prepared to proclaim the Resurrection, yet Jesus entrusted them with the message. Joy grows when shared. If we spread the Gospel, our hearts will open, and fear will fade.

However, the Gospel also warns of opposition. The soldiers at the tomb were bribed to spread falsehoods. This deception, fuelled by money, stands against the truth. Falsehood corrupts, leading back to the tomb, while the Risen Christ calls us into light and life.

Let us reject the darkness of deception and bring our own hidden falsehoods before the light of Christ. May Mary, Mother of the Risen Lord, help us overcome fear and embrace truth, becoming radiant witnesses to the Gospel’s joy.
