Apostle Matthias
John 15:9-17
“I Call You Friends”

Today, the Gospel offers us a beautiful and intimate word from Jesus: “I do not call you servants any longer, but friends.”(Jn 15:15)

In Scripture, to be called a servant of God is already a high honour. Think of Moses, David, Elijah, even Mary – they were called to great missions and entrusted with God’s treasures. But Jesus wants something more for us. Not just roles or responsibilities, but a relationship. He calls us friends.

Friendship is one of life’s most precious gifts. As children, we share toys with our friends. As teenagers, we share secrets. As adults, we share our joys and sorrows. Friendship grows through trust, honesty, and presence. And a true friend doesn’t walk away—even when we make mistakes.

That’s exactly what Jesus offers us. Even when betrayed, He calls Judas “friend” (Mt 26:50). Even in our weakness, He shares everything He has with us: His love, His word, His life. This is not friendship by merit, but by grace. He places Himself in our hands, not because we deserve it, but because He chooses us.

Today we also remember St. Matthias, the Apostle chosen to take the place of Judas. He was selected not for ambition or popularity, but because he had “been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us” (Acts 1:21). He reminds us that friendship with Jesus grows through faithful presence. Like Matthias, we are called to remain close to the Lord and be witnesses of His resurrection.

So today, we’re invited to reflect:
Is Jesus truly a friend to me, or just a distant figure?
Do I live as His friend—with trust, honesty, and love?
And when others fail, do I treat them as Jesus treats me—with friendship that forgives and remains?
Let’s ask the Lord to renew our friendship with Him—real, personal, and faithful. And may Mary, His closest friend on earth, help us to share His friendship with others.

Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter
OR Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima
John 10:22-30
Walking in the Freedom of Faith
“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

The Church celebrates the 108th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three children in Fatima. The Message of Fatima is still relevant for today’s world and the Church – to pray for the conversion of the world and for world peace.

During this Easter Octave, we continue to encounter the Risen Christ who walks among us and calls each of us by name. In the Gospel, the people press Jesus, saying, “If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus responds, not with a new revelation, but with a gentle reminder: “I told you, and you do not believe.”

Faith is not simply about receiving new information—it’s about opening our hearts to Jesus, recognising His voice, and following where He leads. Yet we often find it difficult to truly belong to His flock, even when we think we are already inside the gate.

What holds us back?

Sometimes, it is wealth, not just material riches, but the subtle ways we place our security in possessions, status, or comfort. Other times, it’s a rigid mindset, where we cling more to rules and control than to trust in God’s mercy. Apathy, too, can take root: a heaviness of spirit that dulls our desire for more. Or we may be burdened by worldly distractions, clerical attitudes, or even religious ideologies that complicate the simplicity of the Gospel.

All of these create noise that makes it harder to hear the voice of Jesus.

But the Risen Lord offers something radically different: freedom. A freedom that comes from listening to His voice, knowing we are loved, and choosing to follow Him—day by day, even when the path feels uncertain.

This Easter, let us ask ourselves: What is keeping me from moving forward in faith? Am I truly free to follow Jesus, or am I clinging to something else?

May the Lord grant us the courage to walk through the door that is Christ Himself, and to follow Him with joyful, trusting hearts.

Monday of the Fourth Week of Easter
John 10: 1-10
Discerning the voice of Jesus
“The sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name.” (John 10:3)

In this Easter Octave, the Gospel speaks to us of the Risen Lord who calls each of us by name. He is not distant or indifferent—He knows us personally and intimately, and His voice speaks gently to our hearts. Yet within us echo many voices: some true and life-giving, others false and destructive.

How can we learn to discern the voice of Jesus in the midst of so many inner and outer distractions?

The voice of the Lord never forces, never deceives. It invites, encourages, and consoles. It speaks to the present moment: “Now you can love, now you can forgive, now you can choose the good.” This voice may challenge us, but it always leads us toward peace and deeper trust.

On the other hand, the voice of temptation is urgent and manipulative. It flatters us, but soon accuses. It fixates on regrets of the past or anxieties about the future. It fosters isolation, fear, and selfishness. It promises quick joy but leaves us feeling restless and bitter.

The Risen Jesus wants to lead us out of these enclosures. His voice invites us to walk in light, to live in truth, and to trust in His love. He speaks through Scripture, through prayer, and through the sincere counsel of others. He calls us not only to hear—but to follow.

In this sacred week, let us quiet our hearts and ask: Which voice am I following? Is it drawing me into freedom, or into fear? Let us pray for the grace to recognize the voice of Christ—the One who conquered death—and to follow Him with trust, joy, and open hearts.

May Mary, Mother of Good Counsel, guide us in this path of listening and discernment.

Fourth Sunday of Easter
John 10: 27-30
Hearing, knowing, and following

On this Good Shepherd Sunday, within the joyful light of the Easter Octave, the Gospel (John 10:27–30) invites us to reflect deeply on the tenderness and strength of Jesus, our Risen Shepherd. “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” These words are not just poetic—they are profoundly personal. In them, we find the path of discipleship through hearing, being known, and following.

The Good Shepherd is not distant. He is the One who seeks, calls, and gently speaks our names. Do we make space to hear His voice in prayer, Scripture, and silence? In a world flooded with noise and distractions, we must learn to listen again—not just with our ears, but with hearts open to His Word. The Risen Christ speaks words of peace and hope to all who are weary.

To be known by the Good Shepherd is to be seen, loved, and understood at our deepest core. Jesus doesn’t just know facts about us—He knows our wounds, our fears, and still loves us. The Cross and Resurrection are proof that nothing can separate us from His love. In our darkest valleys, He walks beside us, never abandoning us.

And so, we are called to follow. Like sheep who trust their shepherd, we walk behind Christ, imitating His mercy and compassion. To follow the Risen Shepherd is to carry others, reach out to the lost, and serve with joy. The Resurrection isn’t only a promise of future glory—it is an invitation to rise now and live like Him.

This Good Shepherd Sunday, may we recognize His voice, rest in His loving gaze, and respond with generous hearts. The Shepherd is alive. He knows you. He calls you. Will you follow?
