Coffee with God:June 3, 2025

Memorial of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
John 17:1-11
Loved by God

Today, the Gospel invites us to lift our gaze—just as Jesus did when He raised His eyes to heaven. How often we walk with heads bowed, burdened by worry, weariness, or fear. But the Lord says to us: Lift up your eyes! Look to the Father who loves you. Look beyond the weight of your anxieties. Heaven is not far—it is open to you. Raise your eyes, and rediscover the hope that carries you forward.

Jesus speaks of eternal life—not only as a future promise, but as a life already begun in knowing the Father. This is our calling: to live now in communion with God, to walk in friendship with Him. It is this relationship that gives our lives direction, meaning, and peace. Let us return often to this place of silence and intimacy with the Lord. In prayer, in quiet, in listening, we discover again that we are not alone. We are deeply loved, and called to something far greater than what this world can offer.

Yes, we live in the world, but we do not belong to it. The world distracts us—it clutters our hearts with things that fade. It tells us we are only what we earn or achieve. But you, my dear friends, are more than bills and deadlines. You are sons and daughters of a Father who has given you an eternal inheritance.

So do not be afraid to dream of heaven. Do not be afraid to live for what is eternal. God walks with you. You are loved. And this love—if you welcome it—will change your life.

Let us walk with our eyes lifted high, our hearts grounded in God, and our lives open to His eternal joy.

Amen.

Monday of the Seventh Week of Easter
OR Optional Memorial of Saints Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs
John 16: 29-33
The world cannot conquer us, because Christ has conquered it

As we step into the final week before Pentecost, we are invited to lift our hearts. The Ascension does not mark the absence of Jesus—it multiplies His presence in us through the Holy Spirit. This is not a time for folded arms or hearts closed in fear. The Risen Lord calls us to rise, to open ourselves to the Spirit, and to carry His light into the shadows of the world.

In the Gospel today, we hear the Lord’s final words before His Passion: “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage: I have conquered the world.” What tenderness and strength! Jesus does not deny that suffering will come. He does not promise an easy path. But He does give us something far more powerful—His peace. Not a fleeting comfort, but the deep peace that comes from union with the Father.

Let us not be naïve. We still live in a world wounded by division, war, greed, and injustice. Many hearts are weary. The disciples of Jesus today still face opposition, confusion, even persecution. But we are not alone. The Holy Spirit strengthens us from within, reminding us that love is stronger than hate, hope deeper than despair.

Yes, the disciples once scattered in fear. They thought they understood—and yet their understanding was shallow. But the Lord, patient and faithful, turned their scattering into a sending. He transformed their weakness into mission.

And so today, we too are sent—to be bearers of peace, not fear; to sow hope where the world sees only defeat. The Spirit is alive. Christ is victorious. And no darkness can overcome His light.

Take courage. The world has not conquered you. Instead, Christ already has.
Amen.

Ascension of the Lord
Luke 24: 46-53
Multiplying the presence of the Lord

Today, we contemplate the mystery of the Ascension. At first glance, it may seem like a farewell. Jesus ascends into heaven, and we might imagine the disciples feeling left behind. But no—this is not the end. It is the beginning of a new way of presence, deeper and more universal. Jesus, now seated at the right hand of the Father, is no longer limited by time and space. His presence is multiplied. Through the Holy Spirit, He is with us—always.

Before ascending, Jesus blesses His disciples and promises the Holy Spirit. This is not just a nice gesture. It is the beginning of our mission. The Lord entrusts us with the Gospel, and He equips us with His Spirit to walk with courage, to comfort the afflicted, and to proclaim hope even amid the world’s darkness.

We must not imagine the Ascension as Jesus leaving us behind. Rather, He goes ahead of us, opening the way. He carries our humanity into the heart of the Trinity. He intercedes for us, not as a distant king, but as a brother who knows our wounds.

And so, let us ask: Are we open to the Spirit He has sent? Do we bless others, as He has blessed us? Do we leave space for others to grow, to hope, to rise? The Ascension is a call to witness—to share the joy of the Risen Lord through lives of love, mercy, and prayer.

Let us turn to Mary, the Mother who stayed with the disciples in prayer. She teaches us how to wait with hope and to welcome the Spirit. May she help us to lift our eyes to Heaven, and our hearts to the world.

Come, Holy Spirit. Amen.

Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Luke 1:39-56
Walk with Mary and Elizabeth

Today, as we celebrate the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are invited into a moment of deep humanity and divine grace. Mary, carrying the Son of God in her womb, sets out in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth. It is a journey of faith, love, and mutual support — and in it, we see how God walks with us through the companionship of others.

Often, we reflect on how Mary went to help Elizabeth in her old age. But today, let us also remember: Mary herself was in need. Young, recently pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by confusion and possible shame, she too was searching for understanding — and for a place where she would be welcomed and believed.

Where does she go? To Elizabeth, the only person who might truly understand the mystery she is living, because she too carries a miracle in her womb. And what happens when they meet? The Holy Spirit fills the house. Joy erupts. Elizabeth speaks words of blessing, not suspicion. She sees Mary not with human eyes, but with the eyes of faith: “Blessed are you among women… how is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

This is the power of spirit-filled community. Elizabeth doesn’t judge — she encourages. She doesn’t question — she confirms. How different our world would be if more hearts were like Elizabeth’s: open to welcome, quick to affirm, ready to see the work of God in others, especially in the distressed.

Let us pray today for the grace to be like Mary in her courage, and like Elizabeth in her compassion. Claretians – the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary observe this day as a day of prayer for vocations. Please keep your missionaries in your prayers, especially let us keep in prayer Deacon Ian Dacayanan, as he is ordained to the priesthood — may he, like Mary and Elizabeth, carry Christ with joy to a waiting world.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with love.
