A Voice That Still Speaks

In today’s Gospel, Herod hears of Jesus and is deeply unsettled. “This is John the Baptist,” he says, “he has been raised from the dead.” Herod’s conscience haunts him. Though he silenced the voice of John, he could not silence the truth John proclaimed.

Truth unsettles. John the Baptist spoke it clearly and courageously—and it cost him his life. Jesus, too, became a threat to those in power, not because He raised a sword, but because He revealed what was false, unjust, and corrupt. That is the paradox of truth: while it frees, it also stings; while it heals, it challenges.

In today’s world, it is often tempting to remain silent or conform to the crowd—to seek approval, protect our reputation, or maintain comfort. Like Herod, we may fear losing face or power more than losing our souls. But the Gospel reminds us: truth is not negotiable. We are called to live it, speak it, and—at times—suffer for it.

There’s also a warning here. Herod “lost his head,” not just figuratively, but morally. He allowed passion, pride, and fear to govern his actions. How often do we do the same—acting out of ego or image, rather than conviction? The Gospel calls us back to self-discipline, honesty, and humility.

Saint John the Baptist reminds us that fame fades, but truth remains. Herod is remembered as a weak and fearful man. John is remembered as a faithful voice, crying out for justice and conversion.

Where is your voice today? Are you carrying the cross of truth with courage? Are you free from the fear of what others think? May we live with integrity, speak with love, and follow Christ with boldness—keeping our heads, and our hearts, rooted in Him.

人們問說:“這人是從哪裡得到這麼多智慧的?”他們沒有為自己得到耶穌的教導感到高興,反而是為了冒犯祂。為什麼?因為他們以為自己知道祂的身份:祂是木匠的兒子,只是一個近人,沒有什麼特別的。他們的熟識滋生了輕看,缺乏信德,這使得他們的心對眼前的恩典緊閉。

今天的福音經文談到許多人試圖真誠生活,宣講真理的時候所面臨的痛苦。我們如同耶穌一樣,可能會被最親近的人拋棄,受人誤解,甚至受人憎恨。社會往往看重的是背景,財富或地位,而不是智慧,正直或真理。在這樣的世界,真理反而會成為絆腳石。

聖亞豐索也面對這樣的現實。他原是位傑出的律師,後來他當了神父,他在教會內也受到了批評。可是,他依然忠於自己的使命,向窮人和被遺棄的人宣講福音,即使他受到質疑。他的一生提醒我們:我們的價值並不取決於我們的出身,而是取決於我們如何真實活出基督的真理。

如果你充滿信念和正直,就會知道,你可能會遭到阻力,甚至是來自朋友的阻力。但是,不要因為他們,就使你的光黯淡。耶穌也曾被拒絕,而且被家鄉的人拒絕。祂被貼上標籤,受人誤解,被人遮罩,這是實實在在的痛苦。但是,請放心:被釘在十字架上的基督告訴我們:拒絕永不會是最終定論。

繼續播種。繼續宣講。不是每個人都會理解的,這不會是你的負擔。要忠於你的聖召。只要有愛,只要有毅力,就會結出真理的果實。

Faith Beyond Labels

“Where did this man get all this wisdom?” the people asked. Rather than rejoice in Jesus’ teaching, they took offence. Why? Because they thought they already knew who he was: the carpenter’s son, just a neighbour, nothing special. Their familiarity bred contempt, and their lack of faith closed their hearts to the grace right in front of them.

This Gospel speaks to the painful reality many face when trying to live authentically and proclaim the truth. Like Jesus, we may be dismissed, misunderstood, or even resented by those closest to us. Society often values background, wealth, or status more than wisdom, integrity, or truth. In such a world, truth itself can become a stumbling block.

St. Alphonsus Liguori faced this himself. A brilliant lawyer turned priest, he was criticised even within the Church. Yet he remained faithful to his mission, offering the Gospel to the poor and abandoned, even when others doubted him. His life reminds us: our value is not determined by where we come from but by how faithfully we live the truth of Christ.

If you shine with conviction and integrity, know that you may meet resistance—even from friends. But don’t let that dim your light. Jesus, too, was rejected, not by strangers but by those from his hometown. The pain of being labeled, misunderstood, or blocked out is real. But take heart: the crucified Christ shows us that rejection never has the last word.

Keep sowing. Keep preaching. Not everyone will understand, but that’s not your burden to carry. Stay faithful to your calling. Truth, when lived with love and perseverance, always bears fruit.

分清寶藏

耶穌繼續天國的比喻 —— 今天,祂講述的是投到海中,網羅各種各樣魚的網。網滿了以後,捕魚的人就開始分類 —— 留下好的,剩下的被丟棄。這對耶穌來說是一個熟悉的場景,祂曾在提比黎雅湖畔生活過一段時間。但是,耶穌所說比喻的深度,不止是魚。

這個比喻,不只是與區分好人和壞人有關。這也是我們每個人有關,每個人(尤其是被吸引到基督之網中的人)身上都有美的地方,也有破碎的地方。有受天主聖神帶領,蒙受寵愛的時候,也有出於自私而妥協的時候。

正如羅耀拉的聖依納爵在神操中教導我們的那樣,我們蒙召去分辨,留意是什麼領我們走向天主,是什麼引我們離開天主。基督徒成熟的過程,就是我們心靈淨化的過程,就是讓天主聖神燒盡所有那沒有生命的東西,好使基督的美得以保留。

聖史瑪竇,他是皈依的稅吏,他在這段福音經文的結尾,用了一個賢明的經師的圖像,他把新的財寶和舊的財寶都拿出來,這所說的,就是我們的信德之旅。依納爵,他原是士兵,後來,他成了神秘主義者,這表明天主是怎樣那有雄心壯志的人和帶有偏情的人轉變成對福音產生熱忱的人。他沒有拋棄過去,而是讓天主來完善自己。

比喻中的火爐, 並非威脅,而是恩許:我們的腐朽,決不是定論。最後,留在我們身上的,只會是被恩寵塑造的美。今天,福音經文呼籲我們讓天主在我們內工作,與天主聖神合作,成為他人的“天使”,去宣講福音,呼籲他人行善,引導他人離開水進入永生。

Sorting What Is Beautiful

Jesus continues with the Kingdom parables – and today he speaks of the net cast into the sea that gathers fish of every kind. When the net is full, the catch is sorted—good is kept, and the rest is discarded. It’s a familiar scene for Jesus, who spent time by the shores of Lake Tiberias. But the message goes far deeper than fish.

This parable isn’t only about separating good and bad people. It’s about each of us. Within every person—even those drawn into Christ’s net—there is beauty, and there is brokenness. There are moments of Spirit-led love and times of selfish compromise.

As Ignatius of Loyola taught in his Spiritual Exercises, we are called to discern, to notice what leads us toward God and what leads us away. The process of Christian maturity is the purification of our hearts—allowing the Spirit to burn away what is lifeless so that the beauty of Christ may remain.

Matthew the Evangelist, himself a converted tax collector, ends this passage with an image of the wise scribe who brings forth treasures new and old. This, too, speaks to our journey of faith. Ignatius, a soldier turned mystic, shows how God transforms even ambition and passion into zeal for the Gospel. He didn’t discard the past but allowed God to refine it.

The fiery furnace in the parable is not a threat but a promise: that our corruption will not have the last word. In the end, only what is beautiful in us—what has been shaped by grace—will remain. The call today is to let God do this work in us, to cooperate with his Spirit, and to become “angels” to one another—messengers who call forth the good and guide others out of the waters into life.

今天,耶穌給我們說了兩個比喻:一個是說:有一個人,偶然發現了一個隱藏的寶藏,另一個比喻是說:有一個商人發現一顆巨大價值的珍珠。他們都願意捨棄一切,好能得到他們找到的東西,因為他們都意識到:擺在他們面前的一切,都有巨大的價值。

在耶穌時代,常有隱藏寶藏的故事。由於戰爭和入侵,許多人會在危險來臨以前,把貴重的物品埋在地裡,期待那回來的日子。可是,他們常常沒能如願。幾年以後,一個工人,或一個路人,可能會意外發現一些埋藏很久,被人遺忘的東西,可能也會發現一些無價的寶藏。

耶穌採用每天的形象描述天主的國。起初,它看起來並不華麗,並不明顯。它往往隱密,安靜,容易被人忽視。但是,對那些有眼睛去理解,向天主的恩典敞開心扉的人而言,福音成了寶藏,其價值遠超這個世界所能提供的一切。

有些人偶然發現了信仰寶藏 —— 透過朋友的話,一行聖經經文,一個意想不到的美好時刻。有些人,他們如同那個商人一樣,在許多地方品嘗過智慧,但仍然渴望更多。不論是偶然發現,還是渴望尋找,一旦真正與福音相遇,福音就會帶來深刻且持久的喜樂。

耶穌邀請我們用嶄新的眼睛去觀看。祂所提供的寶藏,不是物質上的,祂就是那寶藏,祂的聖言,祂的愛就是那寶藏。我們一旦認出這寶藏,那時,我們蒙召重新定位我們的生活,這不是出於責任,也不是出於恐懼,而是出於喜樂。喜樂是這些比喻的核心。

今天,為了留下寶藏,你會舍掉什麼?你會認同天國的美麗和快樂嗎?

The Joy of Finding the Treasure

Jesus tells us two short parables today—one about a man who stumbles upon a hidden treasure, and another about a merchant who finds a pearl of great value. Both are willing to give up everything they have to obtain what they’ve discovered, because they realise the immense worth of what lies before them.

In the time of Jesus, stories of hidden treasures were common. Because of wars and invasions, many people buried their valuables in fields before fleeing danger, hoping to return someday. Often, they never did. Years later, a labourer or passerby might accidentally discover something buried and long forgotten—something priceless.

Jesus uses this everyday image to describe the Kingdom of Heaven. It doesn’t appear flashy or obvious at first. It is often hidden, quiet, and easily overlooked. But for those who have eyes to see and hearts open to grace, the Gospel becomes a treasure worth more than anything this world offers.

Some people find the treasure of faith by chance—through a friend’s words, a line of Scripture, or a moment of unexpected beauty. Others search for it like the merchant, having tasted wisdom in many places but still longing for more. Whether stumbled upon or sought with longing, when the Gospel is truly encountered, it brings deep and lasting joy.

Jesus invites us to see with new eyes. The treasure He offers is not material—it is Himself, His Word, His love. Once we recognize this treasure, we are called to reorient our lives. Not out of duty or fear, but out of joy. Joy is the beating heart of these parables.
