Welcoming the God Who Comes Today

We begin the Season of Advent today—a season that is always full of quiet longing. There is something beautiful in these early Advent days: the evenings grow darker, yet our hearts begin to look for light. In that spirit, Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel come to us gently but firmly: “Stay awake… be ready.”

At first, these words may sound like a warning, almost like a threat that something frightening is coming. But Jesus is not trying to scare us. He is trying to wake us up—because something beautiful, new and deeply human is being born.

The Gospel takes us back to the time of Noah. People were eating, drinking, marrying—nothing wrong, nothing sinful. They were simply absorbed in their routines, their worries, their plans. What was the problem? They were so caught up in daily life that they could no longer recognise the signs of something new that God was doing. They did not see the “ark” God was preparing for them.

Jesus is telling us: Do not repeat their mistake. The Son of Man comes—quietly, humbly—into the ordinary fields and kitchens of our lives. Two people may be doing the same work, but one heart is awake, open, attentive… and the other is closed, distracted, numbed by the noise of this world.

I think Jesus is speaking to us very directly today. Our lives are full—sometimes overflowing—with worries: health issues, deadlines, family tensions, anxieties about the world, the future of the Church, the violence around us. We might not be worshipping ancient idols like the sun or moon, but we often place modern idols in the heavens: success, money, perfection, productivity, public opinion. These “false stars” promise much but consume our peace.

Advent invites us to let these old stars fall. To notice when we are living on autopilot. To rediscover what truly matters.

Jesus calls Himself the “Son of Man”—the true human being, the one who shows us how to live without devouring each other like the “beasts” of Daniel’s vision. He shows us a new world, a world not built on competition or fear, but on tenderness, service, and dignity.
The Gospel reminds us: God has not given up on humanity. A new world is possible. It begins not with grand gestures, but with simple acts done with great love—done by people who stay awake.

So maybe this Advent we can ask the Lord for one gift: A heart that notices.

Notices the tired face of someone who needs a smile…Notices when anger is rising in us and chooses patience instead…. Notices the quiet ways God whispers hope into our days.

May this Advent be a time of awakening—a time to welcome the God who still comes, today, quietly, tenderly, into the ordinary places where we live and love.

醒寤祈禱

隨著禮儀年接近尾聲，耶穌留給我們兩句最後的囑咐，它們在今天和兩千年前一樣緊迫：“你們要醒寤，要常常祈禱。”

我們常常把警醒想成在焦慮中守望，好似等待暴風雨過去一樣。可是，耶穌所說的警醒與之截然不同，祂要求我們留心天主的臨在，保持醒寤，對天主懷有孝愛之情。這不是意味著讓我們的內心，因分心，享樂或憂慮變得“粗糙”和麻木。

這很容易發生！我們生活在一個充斥著嗓聲的時代 ——無盡的資訊，新聞和娛樂。我們常常疲於應對，這使我們靈性的敏銳度逐漸變得遲鈍。我們再也看不到身邊的苦難，不再留意悄然流動的恩典。另一方面，過度接觸這苦痛的世界，也會令我們感到恐懼和疲憊，使我們陷入癱瘓。耶穌邀請我們找到一種神聖的平衡 —— 保持醒寤，但是，不要被壓垮；積極參與，但不要被奴役。

耶穌告訴我們：實現這樣的平衡，關鍵在於祈禱：“保持醒寤，時時祈禱，好能獲得力量，以此應對即將發生的一切。”祈禱能使心靈保持柔軟與活力。它一次又一次使我們紮根于天主的平安內。它能使我們恢復清醒，使我們有勇氣“站在人子面前”，使我們誠實，忠信，無所畏懼地面對生活。

在這禮儀年尾聲，也許耶穌會溫柔地問我們：“你們的心在哪裡？你們的心中充滿了什麼？”祂呼籲我們“醒寤祈禱”，這不是預示著厄運，也不是威脅，而是邀請我們清醒地生活 —— 深深地愛，專心地服務，時刻做好準備，不是出於恐懼，而是出於信任。

對那些懷揣愛意守望、堅持不懈祈禱的人而言，他們決不會措手不及。救主每天都會悄然降臨——願祂總能發現我們醒寤著，正在祈禱，處在平安中。

Watch and Pray

As the liturgical year draws to its close, Jesus leaves us with two final words that are as urgent today as they were two thousand years ago: “Be on your guard… and pray at all times.”

We often imagine vigilance as an anxious watching, like waiting for a storm to pass. But the vigilance Jesus speaks of is quite different — it is the attentive, loving awareness of a heart that remains awake to God’s presence. It means not allowing our hearts to become “coarsened,” dulled by distractions, pleasure, or worries.

How easily this happens! We live in an age overflowing with noise — endless information, news, and entertainment. We scroll, we react, we rush — and little by little, our spiritual sensitivity dulls. We stop seeing the suffering around us, stop noticing the quiet movements of grace. On the other hand, too much exposure to the pain of the world can also paralyse us with fear or fatigue. Jesus invites us to find a sacred balance — to re main aware, but not overwhelmed; engaged, but not enslaved.

And the key to this balance, He tells us, is prayer. “Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen.” Prayer keeps the heart soft and alive. It roots us again and again in God’s peace. It restores our clarity and gives us courage to “stand before the Son of Man” — that is, to face life honestly, faithfully, and without fear.

At the close of this year, perhaps Jesus is gently asking us: “Where is your heart? What fills it?” His call to “watch and pray” is not a threat of doom, but an invitation to live awake — to love deeply, to serve attentively, and to stand ready, not with dread but with trust.

For the one who watches with love and prays with perseverance will never be caught unprepared. The Lord comes quietly each day — may He always find us awake, praying, and at peace.

今天，耶穌邀請我們關注一個非常簡單的事物 —— 一棵無花果樹。“看看無花果樹，以及每一棵樹；你們看到它們發芽，就知道夏天近了。”大自然有自己的節奏。無花果樹的發芽，意味著生命的復蘇，預示著新生事物即將來到。同時，耶穌呼籲我們睜開眼睛，觀看天主在我們的生命和世界中所做的一切。天主國不是遙不可及的夢想，它已然臨近，常常隱藏在表面之下。

其中的挑戰在於：保持專注，不焦慮，不癡迷于預測未來 ，而是保持醒寤，明辨是非。每一代人都試圖推測世界末日，可是，耶穌提醒我們：“沒有人知道那日子，或是那個時刻。”重要的不是時機，而是我們內心準備的程度。

接著，耶穌給了所有福音經書中最令人安慰的保證：“天和地都要消逝，可是，我的話決不會消逝。”我們所看到的一切，即使是最持久的事物，總有消逝的一天。可是，天主聖言永遠常存。在這變化之多的世界，我們經常感到不確定和不安，但是，天主聖言是我們的錨。只有天主聖言，永不失敗，永不欺騙，永不消亡。

在我們生活的時代，許多聲音都聲稱其掌握真理，恐懼和困惑極易在其間生根。可是，基督的門徒學會了聆聽那持久不變，令人安靜，變得忠信的聖言，那帶來和平而非令人恐慌，使人充滿希望而非令人感到恐懼的聖言。

讓我們成為以信德的眼光解讀時代徵兆的人，讓我們堅守那永不消逝的聖言。

Friday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 21: 29-33
The word that never passes away

Jesus invites us today to look at something very simple — a fig tree. “Look at the fig tree and indeed every tree; as soon as you see them bud, you know that summer is near.” Nature has its rhythms. The budding of the fig tree announces that life is returning, that something new is about to happen. In the same way, Jesus calls us to open our eyes to the movements of God in our lives and in our world. The Kingdom of God is not a distant dream; it is already near, quietly growing, often hidden beneath the surface.

The challenge is to stay attentive — not anxious, not obsessed with predicting the future, but awake and discerning. People in every generation have tried to calculate the end of the world, but Jesus reminds us that “no one knows the day or the hour.” What matters is not the timing, but the readiness of our hearts.

Then Jesus gives us one of the most consoling assurances in all the Gospels: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Everything we see — even the most enduring things — will one day fade. But His word remains. In a world where so much changes, where we often feel uncertain or insecure, the Word of God is our anchor. It is the one thing that never fails, never deceives, never dies.

We live in a time when many voices claim to have the truth, when fear and confusion easily take root. But the disciple of Christ learns to listen to the quiet, faithful word that endures — the word that brings peace, not panic; hope, not fear.

Let us then be people who read the signs of the times with the eyes of faith, and who cling to the Word that never passes away.

在今天的福音經文中，耶穌繼續祂有關毀滅的未世教導，祂描述了軍隊包圍城池，諸天混亂，萬邦因恐懼而戰慄的景象。可是，即使身處動盪，祂仍然給我們傳遞了一個深具希望的訊息：“這些事發生的時候，你們要挺直站立，昂首挺胸，因為你們的自由近了。”

為初期基督徒而言，耶路撒冷的陷落是一個痛苦的時刻。他們熱愛的城，他們的信仰和身份的中心，化為廢墟。這一定看似萬物的終結。可是，路加在耶路撒冷毀滅後撰寫他的福音，説明他的讀者認識到：這雖是悲劇，可是，這沒有超出天主的計畫。舊的世界已經消逝，天主正準備帶來新的事物 —— 新天新地。

這段經文提醒我們：天主往往藉著危機開展工作。耶穌呼籲我們不要絕望，而是要有希望。祂邀請我們：不論我們的世界，我們每個人的生活中，是否爆發了戰爭，是否身陷在災難和混亂，都要保持正直和忠誠。那要來的自由，不是意味著逃離苦難，而是公道的天國，和平的天國，屬人的天國，即將來到的曙光。

人子要“帶著威能和巨大的光榮”來到。這不是一個令人生畏的景象，而是完整的人性和天主性共存的王國的神視，在那個王國，愛取代了統治，憐憫戰勝了暴力。我們是門徒，我們的任務是為這個王國做好準備，使我們的世界，我們的人際關係，我們的團體更有人情化。

因此，當一切好似分崩離析時，我們也要牢記耶穌的話：“挺直站立，昂首挺胸，因為你們的自由已經臨近。”

Luke 21:20-28
Stand erect, hold your heads high

In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues his apocalyptic discourse of destruction, images of armies surrounding the city, chaos in the heavens, and nations trembling in fear. Yet even amid this turmoil, he offers a message of profound hope: “When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.”

For the early Christians, the fall of Jerusalem was a traumatic moment. The city they loved — the centre of their faith and identity — lay in ruins. It must have seemed like the end of everything. But Luke, writing years after the destruction, helps his readers see that even this tragedy was not outside God’s plan. The old world was passing away, and God was preparing to bring forth something new — “a new heaven and a new earth.”

This passage reminds us that God’s work often unfolds through crisis. Jesus calls us not to despair but to hope. In the midst of wars, disasters, and confusion — whether in the world or in our personal lives — He invites us to remain upright and faithful. Liberation is near, not in the sense of escape from suffering, but as the dawning of God’s kingdom of justice, peace, and humanity.

The Son of Man comes “in a cloud with power and great glory.” This is not a fearful image, but the vision of a fully human and divine kingdom, where love replaces domination and mercy triumphs over violence. Our task, as disciples, is to prepare for that kingdom — to humanize our world, our relationships, and our communities.

So when everything seems to fall apart, let us remember the words of Jesus: “Stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near.”
