Luke 6: 27-38
Agapē: Loving Even Those Who Hurt Us

The command to love our enemies is perhaps the most radical and demanding word that Jesus speaks. It is not a suggestion; it is at the heart of the Gospel. Yet to obey it, we must first understand what kind of love he is calling us to.

The Greek word used here is agapē—not the love of passion, nor even the affection we naturally feel for family and friends. Agapē means choosing the good of the other, even when they wrong us. It is not a love of sentiment but of the will, made possible by grace. We cannot force our hearts to feel tender affection toward those who hurt us, but we can decide, in Christ, never to wish them harm and always to desire their highest good. This is divine love.

Christian love is always active. It is not enough to say, “I will not do evil to you.” The Lord calls us further: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The wisdom of the world would tell us the moral principle—do not harm. But Jesus commands something bigger—go out of your way to bless, to forgive, to serve. This is the “extra” of Christian life, the step beyond what is expected, the choice that reveals a heart transformed.

And why do we live this way? Because this is the way of God. He sends His rain on the just and the unjust. He embraces saint and sinner alike. If we love only those who love us, what is special in that? But if we love even our enemies, we become true children of the Father.

To love in this way is costly, sometimes painful. Yet in the end, it fills our hearts with the very joy of God. It makes us free. It makes us like Him.

真福八端不是溫柔的撫慰世人的話;它們好似閃電,以威能和強迫感闖入我們的生活。在瑪竇福音和路加福音中,耶穌都以驚人的話開始祂偉大的講道:“貧窮的人有福了 …… 富有的人有禍了。”這話實在令人感到震驚!拿它與世人思維方法來比較,實在具有顛覆性。

福音經文使我們直面一個選擇:我們想要的幸福,是今世的,還是基督的?世人說:“強壯的人,富有的人,舒適的人,真是有福。”可是,耶穌說:“你們現在饑餓的人,現在哭泣的人,為了我的緣故受迫害的人的,真是有福。”這不是詩歌,而是內心的革命,它呼籲我們以不同的方式生活。

耶穌講得很清楚:如果我們把精力花費在追逐財富,地位,快樂上,我們有可能成功,我們將擁有一切。可是,祂警告我們說:“你夠了!”沒有什麼是持久的。如果我們把心放在祂身上,忠心於信實,仁慈,真理,我們可能會面臨困苦,可能會受人誤解,但是,我們將得到別人無法奪走的喜樂。

諸聖明白這一點。在世人眼中,他們過著貧窮的生活,可是,他們富於信德,心神自由,喜形於色。聖保祿提醒我們:“這現時的痛苦,正分外無比地給我們準備一份無與倫比的光榮厚報。”(參看:格後4:17)

真福八端問我們:我們尋找的是什麼樣的幸福?世界的短暫安慰,還是屬於基督的永恆喜樂?我們冒著遭遇麻煩的風險追隨基督,可是,只有找到祂,我們的內心深處,才能找到平安。選擇祂行徑的人,真是有福。

Happiness in Christ’s way, not the world’s

The Beatitudes are not gentle words meant to soothe; they are like flashes of lightning, breaking into our lives with power and urgency. Both in Matthew and Luke, Jesus begins His great sermon with these startling proclamations: “Blessed are the poor… Woe to the rich.” What a shock! How upside down this sounds compared to the world’s way of thinking.

The Gospel confronts us with a choice: Do we want happiness according to the world, or according to Christ? The world says, “Blessed are the strong, the wealthy, the comfortable.” But Jesus proclaims, “Blessed are you who hunger now, who weep now, who are persecuted for my sake.” This is not mere poetry—it is a revolution of the heart. It is a call to live differently.

Jesus is clear: if we give our whole energy to chasing wealth, status, and pleasure, we may succeed—but that is all we will ever have. “You have had it,” He warns. Nothing remains for eternity. But if we set our hearts on Him—on fidelity, on mercy, on truth—we may face struggle, we may be misunderstood, but we will have joy that no one can take away.

The saints understood this. They often lived poor in the world’s eyes, but rich in faith, free in spirit, radiant in joy. As St. Paul reminds us, “This slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Cor 4:17).

The Beatitudes ask us: What kind of happiness do we seek? The world’s passing comfort—or the eternal joy of Christ? To follow Jesus is to risk trouble, but it is also to find the deep peace that only He can give. Blessed indeed are those who choose His way.

我們讀福音經文的時候,看到耶穌揀選自己的門徒。首要原因,簡單深刻:祂希望他們和祂在一起(參看:谷3:14)。耶穌沒有召叫他們先去做事,而是呼籲他們,因著友誼,和祂在一起。想想天主子渴望朋友般的親密,需要一顆與祂同行的心,實在很美。天主是慈父,自己的兒女回家以前,祂總不滿足。

耶穌本可給我們留下一本書,或一套思維體系,可是,祂選擇的是:在男人和女人之間的生活的生活中,寫下祂的資訊。他們成了祂“活生生的書”。這提醒我們:基督宗教不是一種理論,而是一種共同的生活。成為門徒意味著:成為學習者,總向上主學習,更深入聆聽祂的聖言,直到我們與祂面對面相見的那一天。

耶穌使他們成為宗徒,委派他們作為大使,兩個兩個出去。基督徒總不為自己;祂常被派遣,我們蒙召代表基督,不僅以我們的言語,也要以我們的生命,我們的動作,我們所懷的憐憫之情。每個蒙召成為使徒的孩子,都被稱作“基督的樣板”。每個基督徒都應該成為基督的生活樣板。

但是,要注意的是:耶穌所揀選的人,不是非凡的人。他們是漁夫,稅吏,甚至在社會眼中的敵人。可是,耶穌使他們共融,瑪竇是稅吏,西滿是熱忱者,這兩人本該彼此惱恨。只有基督才能使這樣對立的人和平共處。這就是祂的神跡,祂化分裂為共融。

讓我們問問自己:我是否如同祂的朋友那樣生活?我是否使我的一生成為祂的訊息?在我生活的地方,我是祂愛的使者嗎?

Luke 6:12-19
Chosen to be with Him

When we read the Gospel, we see Jesus choosing His apostles. And the first reason is simple but profound: He wanted them to be with Him (cf. Mk 3:14). Jesus did not call them first to do things, but to live in friendship with Him. It is beautiful to think that the Son of God desired the closeness of friends, that He needed hearts to walk with Him. God, who is Father, is not content until every child has returned home.

Jesus could have left us a book or a system of ideas, but He chose instead to write His message in the lives of men and women. They became His “living books.” This reminds us that Christianity is not a theory but a life shared. To be a disciple means to be a learner—always learning from the Lord, always listening more deeply to His Word, until the day we meet Him face to face.

And then Jesus made them apostles—sent ones, ambassadors. A Christian is never only for himself; he is always sent. We are called to represent Christ, not only with our words but with our lives, our gestures, our mercy. A child once called the apostles “Jesus’ samples.” Yes! Every Christian is meant to be a living sample of Christ.

But notice this: those Jesus chose were not extraordinary men. They were fishermen, tax collectors, and even enemies in society’s eyes. Yet Jesus united them, Matthew the tax collector and Simon the Zealot, men who should have hated each other. Only Christ can make such opposites live together in peace. This is His miracle—turning division into communion.

Let us ask ourselves: Am I living as His friend? Am I letting my life become His message? Am I an ambassador of His love where I live?

瑪利亞的渺小,天主的偉大

今天我們慶祝聖母誕辰。教會邀請我們因她的誕生,歡欣鼓舞,因為天主藉著她開始了救贖之夢,藉由她攝取肉身,而成為人。因著瑪利亞的誕生,如此渺小,如此隱密的瑪利亞,成為通往廣闊之美的大門。這就是天主的作為:一切都始自渺小。

米該亞先知提醒我們:“但是,你,白冷,厄法辣因,你在猶大家族中是微小的,但是,將由你為我出生一個統治以色列的人。”天主揀選那微小的,那隱藏不見的去做大事。救主要出自白冷城。和平之王生於瑪利亞微小純潔的生命。天主因她的渺小為世界開啟了修好與合一的空間。

瑪利亞誕生的時候,沒有壯觀的場面或徵兆。她悄悄出生在一個普通的家庭。天主的夢想在她身上紮根。她對天主說了“是”。耶穌藉著她進入世界,與萬有修好。這是天主的作為:天主沒有以雜訊或威能,也沒有以世俗的偉大,而是以謙卑,簡單和耐心工作。

福音給了我們一段很長的家譜,在名單上,有聖人的名字,也有罪人的名字。有英雄和失敗的人的人生旅途。這可能看似平淡。可是,福音告訴我們一件很重要的資訊:天主與自己的百姓同行。祂沒有用魔杖拯救我們。祂的旅途貫通歷史,穿越世代,穿越人類的軟弱和罪惡,直到瑪利亞的誕生,她的誕生為耶穌鋪平了道路。天主不怕我們的過錯:祂與他們同行。祂親近自己的百姓,總不遺棄他們。

在這個慶節,我們也學到天主與人修好,祂沒有在盛大的集會,也沒有以檔與人締結和平,而是以日常生活中每個小步驟締結和平。和平始於小事上:在寬恕的舉動,善意的言語,耐心的聆聽,接納與自己不同的人。瑪利亞向我們表明:她的渺小身軀,成了那攝取血肉,成為和平之天主的空間。

今天的慶典還有另一個恩典:希望。瑪利亞的誕生,是救恩的曙光。這表明:天主沒有忘記自己的子民,祂的恩許,真實有效。正如福音中的若瑟一樣,他夢想著天主的計畫,我們也受邀去夢想天主的計畫。重要的是:天主自己也做夢。祂夢想著能與世人修好,祂夢想一個沒有一人被排除於外的家庭,一個和平共處的民族,瑪利亞的誕辰,是實現 夢想的第一縷曙光。

弟兄姐妹們:值此我們慶祝瑪利亞的誕辰,讓我們向天主祈禱共融與和平的恩典。讓我們從她的渺小學習,滿懷謙恭之情,一步一步與天主同行。讓我們不要害怕,從小事上開始,從在暗中行愛德工夫開始:一小塊餅,一點點酒,可是,所有的一切都蘊含天主的夢想,祂的愛,祂的平安,祂的聖子。

我們在瑪利亞的誕生看到天主在我們面前敞開的偉大空間:藉著微小的人實現和平,藉著同行實現修好,永不落空的希望。

Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Matthew 1:18-23
The Littleness of Mary, the Greatness of God

Today we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Church invites us to rejoice at the birth of the one through whom God’s dream of salvation began to take flesh. In Mary’s birth, something so small, so hidden, becomes the doorway to something vast and beautiful. This is God’s way: everything begins in littleness.

The Prophet Micah reminds us: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel.” God chooses what is little, humble, and hidden to do great works. From the small village of Bethlehem comes the Savior. From the small, pure life of Mary comes the Prince of Peace. In her littleness, God opens a horizon of reconciliation and unity for the world.

Mary’s birth is not accompanied by great spectacles or signs. She is born quietly, into an ordinary family. And yet, in her, God’s dream takes root. She will say “yes” to God, and through her, Jesus, the reconciler of all, will enter the world. This is how God works: not with noise or power, not with worldly greatness, but in humility, simplicity, and patience.

The Gospel gives us a long genealogy—names upon names, a journey through saints and sinners, heroes and failures. It may seem monotonous, but it tells us something important: God walks with His people. He does not save us with a magic wand. He journeys through history, through generations, through human weakness and sin, until the birth of Mary prepares the way for Jesus. God is not afraid of our faults; He enters into them. He is close, and He never abandons His people.

On this feast, we also learn that God reconciles and makes peace not in great assemblies or documents, but in the small steps of everyday life. Peace begins in the little things: in a gesture of forgiveness, in a word of kindness, in listening patiently, in welcoming the one who is different. Mary shows us this way: her littleness becomes the space where God’s peace takes flesh.

There is another gift in today’s celebration: hope. Mary’s birth is the dawn of salvation. It is the sign that God has not forgotten His people, that His promises are true. Like Joseph in the Gospel, who dreams of God’s plan, we too are invited to dream. And even more: God Himself dreams. He dreams of a reconciled humanity, a family where no one is excluded, a people who walk together in peace. Mary’s birth is the first light of this dream fulfilled.

Brothers and sisters, as we celebrate the Nativity of Mary, let us ask for the grace of unity and peace. Let us learn from her littleness to walk with God, step by step, in humility. Let us not be afraid of small beginnings, of hidden acts of love. In the Eucharist, too, everything is hidden in littleness: a small piece of bread, a little wine—yet there is the whole dream of God, His love, His peace, His Son.

In Mary’s birth, we see God’s great horizon opening before us: peace through littleness, reconciliation through walking together, and hope that never fails.
