聖保祿在寫給厄弗所人的書信中談到在初期教會內,猶太人和外邦人之間的衝突,在隨著外邦人越來越多,這種衝突一直存在。某些基督徒,猶太人和外邦人,他們都彼此反對,持懷疑態度。保祿在書信中強調:基督徒應該留意的,就是不要輕看來自不同背景的基督徒。

保祿的教導還強調了基督所作犧牲的重要性,其所象徵的是:猶太人和外邦人之間的敵對和障礙已被打破。在耶路撒冷,有一堵牆,這堵牆把外邦人的庭院和內部區域分開。在這牆上有一段銘文,警告外邦人:如果他們進到聖殿的禁區, 就會死。今天,人們在自己的思想和心中築起了這堵牆。我們都傾向用“他們”和“我們”的術語進行思考。我們受與自己相同的人所吸引,被那些與我們不同的人所排斥。
隨著耶穌成了新的聖殿,再不需要用一堵牆來分隔自己的百姓。基督呼籲我們愛我們的近人,即使我們的近人恰好是撒瑪黎雅人 —— 一個來自不同地方,相信不同宗教的人。天主想推到那使我們彼此分別的牆。

20世紀初期的蘇格蘭作家 James Matthew Barrie,他以戲劇作品《彼得潘》(Peter Pan)而馳名。他曾說:“人一生中最危險的一天,就是他找到明天一詞,因為當他找到那詞那一天,就學會了拖延!”今天的福音經文談到做好準備,迎接耶穌的重要性!為了那個瞬間,我們做了哪些準備?死亡的時刻來到,我們能如同耶穌所說的那樣,回應天父嗎?耶穌說:“父,我把我的靈魂交在禰的手中!”

Be ready!

In his letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul discusses the conflicts between Jewish and Gentile Christians in the early Church, which persisted as Gentiles gained more prominence. Certain Christians, both Jewish and Gentile, regarded those from the opposing group with suspicion. Paul stresses in this letter the importance of Christians being mindful not to hold contempt for fellow Christians from different backgrounds.

Paul’s teachings also emphasise the significance of Christ’s sacrifice, symbolised by the breaking down of the barrier of hostility that divided the Jews and Gentiles. In the Jerusalem Temple, a wall separated the Court of the Gentiles from the inner areas. Inscriptions on this wall warned Gentiles of death if they entered the restricted parts of the temple. Today, People construct walls in their minds and hearts. We all tend to think in terms of “them” versus “us.” We are drawn to those who are like us and repelled by those who are not.

With Jesus becoming the new temple, there was no longer a need for a wall to separate his people. Christ calls us to love our neighbour, even if our neighbour happens to be a Samaritan—a person from a different place and following a different religion. God wants to bring down the walls that divide us.

James Matthew Barrie, a Scottish writer from the early 20th century, is best known for his play Peter Pan. He once stated, “The most perilous day in a man’s life is when he discovers the word tomorrow because on that day, he learns procrastination! Today’s Gospel discusses the importance of readiness to welcome Jesus and pertains to the uncertainty of the moment when we will face death. How prepared are we for that moment? When death arrives, will we be able to echo Jesus’ words: “Father! Into your hands, I commend my spirit.”

貪婪往往會引起恐懼。我們傾向於緊緊抓住我們害怕失去的東西。自然而然的,我們擁有的越多,我們失去的也越多。我們越自信自己能囤積更多,我們擁有的存儲設施越大,就會使我們更安全。然而,正如比喻提醒我們的那樣,這根本不是真的。


貪婪是一種永遠無法用金錢或財產滿足的空虛。諷刺的是:要治癒貪婪,就不要靠獲取,而是要靠施捨。按Richard Rohr所言,投降並不意味著放棄,而是意味著施捨。就是說:要把我們自己完全獻出,交給當下,境況,把我們擺在那些在我們面前的人和天主面前。


比喻中的那個農人,他獲得了一個帝國,但是,他的貪婪,使他漸漸失掉自己的靈魂和自己的王國。處理自己產業的人,在渴望擁有他所聲稱,理所當然屬於他的物品的偏情的驅使下,也使自己面臨著被嫉妒壓垮,輕看自己當下所擁有的財富,失掉與自己兄弟關係的風險。當追求財富成了我們生活的動力,當對財產的渴望開始支配我們的生活時,在天主眼中,我們的靈魂就會變得越來越貧窮。


思考當下的福音訊息,是一項重大的挑戰。我發現很難承認自己是貪婪的,與其為我自己辯護或評斷自己,征服貪婪的最有效方法就是更有效的運用我所擁有的財富。我覺得,自己有必要練習感恩,要提醒自己:我所呼吸的,我的住所,我擁有的食物和水,我所擁有的愛情和安全感,只要在我的生活中有天主,這一切才能真正使我富有。所有的一切,為我而言,已足矣!

Count your blessings!

Greed is often a cause of fear. We tend to cling tightly to what we are afraid of losing. And naturally, the more we possess, the more we have to lose. We convince ourselves that the more we can accumulate, the larger our storage facilities and the safer we will be. However, as the parable reminds us, this is simply not true.

Greed is fuelled by a sense of emptiness that can never be satisfied by money or possessions. Ironically, greed can be cured not by acquiring but by giving; by surrendering. According to Richard Rohr, surrender is not about giving up but about giving to. It’s about giving ourselves fully to the present moment, the situation, the person in front of us, and God.

The farmer in the parable gained an empire, but his greed caused him to forfeit both his soul and his empire. The man dealing with inheritance problems, driven by the desire to claim what he believed was rightfully his, was also at risk of being overtaken by envy, potentially losing sight of the wealth he already had and risking his relationship with his brother. When the pursuit of money becomes the driving force in our lives, when the desire for possessions starts to dominate us, our souls become increasingly impoverished in the eyes of God.

Contemplating the message of the Gospel presents a significant challenge. I have found it difficult to admit how greedy I am. Instead of defending or judging myself, the most effective way to conquer greed is to acknowledge the plenty that I already have. I need to consciously practice thankfulness and remind myself that as long as I have breath, shelter, food, water, love, security, and as long as I have God in my life, I am genuinely rich. This is sufficient—I am sufficient.

去邀請大家來赴宴

今天的福音經文提醒我們:在耶穌的眼中,領袖並非與權威或權力有關,而是於服務和謙卑有關。耶穌看重的是那些承擔責任的人,但是強調正確態度的重要性。我們作為基督徒,必須明白,真正的領袖應體現出基督服務眾人的榜樣,而非進行自我推銷。

今天,在世界傳教節,教會提醒我們:我們在傳播天主的愛和祂王國喜訊的事業上,正扮演著至關重要的作用。本年,教宗方濟各選擇了一個適當的主題:“去邀請大家來赴宴。”這充分體現了天主之愛的包容性,我們向世界分享天主之愛的責任。正如瑪竇福音記述的那樣:來赴婚宴的邀請,是向眾人發出的,我們蒙召與眾人分享天主的恩典,不論他們是誰,來自何方。


在今天的福音經文,我們聽到門徒中間因關於誰在耶穌的國內擔任最高的職位的爭論。雅各伯和若望尋求聲望,以致在團隊內部引起了緊張的氣氛。然而,耶穌改變他們關注了焦點,提醒他們,領袖並非與地位或掌握能力有關,而是與服務他人有關。祂邀請他們分享祂的杯爵,就是祂的愛和祂甘願為他人受苦的體現。這個邀請,並不只是向宗徒發出的,而是向我們所有尋求跟隨基督的人。


值此世界傳教節,我們得到提醒:傳教工作也與服務有關,而非與地位有關。傳教士出去福傳,並非是為了控制別人或威脅別人,而是充滿愛意地邀請他人進入天主的愛。我們都蒙召成為傳教士,以謙卑的服務和真誠的愛,彼此分享信德和希望的恩典。在我們向那些天主派遣出去福傳的人致敬的同時,也要記得:不論我們身處何方,都要回應我們的召叫。

Mark 10: 35-45

Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet

Today’s Gospel reminds us that leadership, in Jesus’ eyes, is not about authority or power but about service and humility. Jesus values those who take up responsibility but stresses the importance of the right attitude. As Christians, we understand that true leadership mirrors Christ’s example of service, not self-promotion.

Today, on World Mission Day, the Church reminds us of the crucial role missionaries play in spreading God’s love and the Good News of His Kingdom. Pope Francis has chosen a fitting theme this year: “Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet,” which reflects the inclusiveness of God’s love and our responsibility to share it with the world. Just as in the Gospel of Matthew, where the invitation to the banquet is extended to all, so too are we called to share God’s grace with everyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from.

In today’s Gospel, we hear of a dispute among the apostles about who should hold the highest positions in the Kingdom Jesus would establish. James and John sought prestige, causing tension within the group. Jesus, however, redirects their focus, reminding them that leadership is not about status or control but about serving others. He invites them to share in His chalice, a symbol of His love and His willingness to suffer for others. This invitation is not just for the apostles but for all of us who seek to follow Christ.

On this World Mission Day, we are reminded that mission work, too, is about service, not status. Missionaries do not go out to control or coerce but to lovingly invite others into the fullness of God’s love. We are all called to be missionaries, sharing the gifts of faith and hope with others through humble service and genuine care. As we honour those serving in missions, we are also reminded to take up our own call to serve wherever we are.

Luke 12: 8-12
Witnessing Christ in a hostile world

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prepares His disciples for their trials, urging them to stay faithful despite persecution. This message resonates strongly in today’s world, where many struggle with faith amidst personal, social, and global challenges. From wars to moral confusion, Christians are often pressured to compromise their beliefs. Yet, Jesus’ words remind us that we are called to be steadfast, even when faced with hardship.

Jesus speaks of two types of sins: words against the Son of Man, which can be forgiven, and blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which cannot. This “blasphemy” is a wilful, persistent rejection of God’s grace—a refusal to believe despite knowing the truth. While human weakness, like Peter’s denial of Christ, is forgivable when met with repentance, a heart that consistently denies God’s mercy closes itself off to forgiveness.

Luke’s Gospel reflects the early Christian community’s struggle to hold on to faith under persecution. Today, in a world increasingly hostile to Christian values, we face similar challenges. Whether through public pressure or personal trials, we are called to witness Christ not only with words but through the way we live our lives.

Jesus challenges us: are we willing to acknowledge Him as Lord in our daily lives? Do our conversations, emails, and social media posts reflect our faith? Are we using our words to glorify God in a world filled with noise? As St. Luke reminds us, we are to bear witness to Christ every day, trusting in God’s providential care as we navigate a world that often resists the message of the Gospel.
