Saturday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 13: 1-9
God’s patience must drive us to conversion

In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls for repentance through the parable of the barren fig tree. Many people still believe that certain tragedies are God’s punishments for our sins. However, Jesus rejects this notion and calls all to repentance. Giving more time for the barren fig tree to bear fruit illustrates God’s patience and the urgency of transformation.

Pope Francis often echoes this call to conversion in his teachings. In Evangelii Gaudium, he speaks of the need for personal and communal renewal, emphasising that the Church and the world cannot remain stagnant. We are all called to bear fruit and live in a way that reflects God’s love, mercy, and justice. The Pope warns against the “globalisation of indifference,” where we become complacent or disconnected from the sufferings around us.

Today, as Pope Francis points out in Laudato Si’ and Fratelli Tutti, we are faced with numerous “signs of the times,” such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and increasing division. These are reminders that repentance is not just an individual act but also a communal and global one. The world is like the fig tree—God gives us time and grace to change our ways, but this time is not infinite.

In our daily lives, we in the Church, are called to examine where we are like the barren fig tree, where we might need to turn away from complacency and sin. Pope Francis urges us to be active agents of change and cultivate lives that bear the fruits of love, solidarity, and care for creation. Through our individual and collective acts of repentance, we open ourselves to God’s mercy and the opportunity for new life.

Luke 12: 54-59
Discerning signs of the time is a commandment

In today’s Gospel, Jesus rebukes the crowd for failing to discern the signs of the times. He urges them to recognise the present moment and reconcile before it is too late. This Gospel calls us to spiritual awareness and moral responsibility, particularly in our current context.

Pope Francis often speaks about the need for discernment in today’s world, challenging us to see beyond superficial distractions and understand the deeper movements of the Holy Spirit. In Laudato Si’, he warns of the environmental crisis as one of the “signs of the times,” calling humanity to urgent action in caring for creation. This mirrors Jesus’ warning in the Gospel—to see and act before irreversible harm is done. Just as people can predict the weather, we must now read the signs of ecological degradation, social injustice, and global suffering, responding with faith and responsibility.

Contemporary developments, such as rising inequality, conflicts, and climate change, present signs that we cannot ignore. Pope Francis urges us to live the Gospel authentically, which means recognising the urgency of our time and working for peace, justice, and reconciliation. In his teachings, he emphasises the need for dialogue, solidarity, and caring for the poor, which aligns with Jesus’ call for reconciliation before judgement.

In our personal lives, this Gospel invites us to examine where we may be avoiding necessary changes or ignoring pressing issues, both spiritually and socially. Are we discerning the signs of our own times—whether in our communities, our relationships, or the global challenges we face? As followers of Christ, we must be open to conversion, acting with courage and compassion to build a world that reflects the values of the Gospel.

10月24日是19世紀西班牙總主教聖安多尼·瑪利亞·柯樂仁（St. Antony Mary Claret）的紀念日，他畢生致力於採用各種方式宣講耶穌的福音。他成立了聖母無玷聖心孝子會（he Congregation of Missionaries Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary），也就是現在所稱的柯樂仁傳教會（Claretian Missionaries）
柯樂仁（Claret）神父在定義聖母聖心孝子的時候說：“他應當是充滿天主之愛的人 ……”在今天的福音經文中，耶穌談論了那投到地上的火，這火會引發分裂，甚至會在家庭內部造成分裂。這段具有挑戰性的經文突顯了成門徒要付出的代價，更突顯了福音的變革力量，這往往會對我們的舒適和現狀構成干擾。耶穌的話提醒我們：祂的訊息，並不是要我們感到自滿，而是要我們發生徹底的轉變，選擇與天主的國相稱的價值觀，而非與這個世界相稱的價值觀。
今天，我們經常看到各種各樣的緊張局勢。時常會因社會公義，環境管理，教會內的包容性，引發爭議，形成分歧。教宗方濟各呼籲人們照料那些被邊緣化的人，解決氣候危機，構建一個同道偕行的教會，這同時引發了人們的支持和抵制。這與耶穌的話相呼應，即祂的到來，會導致分裂，福音邀請我們直面我們的舒適區，為了愛和公義做出艱難的選擇。

在我們的日常生活中，我們蒙召去分辨是否全心追隨基督，即使這樣會令我們感到不適或衝突。耶穌所說的“火”就是聖神的工作，祂同時淨化和改變我們的心和社會。我們作為門徒，必須接受這火，容許這火改變我們的優先項，引導我們更忠信，更勇敢地為福音作見證。

Or Optional Memorial of Saint Anthony Mary Claret, Bishop
Luke 12: 49-53
Jesus did not call us to walk the easy way

October 24 is the memorial of St. Antony Mary Claret, a Spanish archbishop of the 19th century who dedicated his life to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus through all possible means. He founded the Congregation of Missionaries Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, presently also known as Claretian Missionaries.

While defining the identity of a son of the Heart of Mary, Father Claret said “he should be a man on fire with God’s love…” In the Gospel today, Jesus speaks of bringing fire to the earth and causing division, even within families. This challenging passage highlights the cost of discipleship and the transformative power of the Gospel, which often disrupts comfort and the status quo. Jesus’ words remind us that His message is not one of complacency but of radical change, calling us to choose God’s kingdom over worldly values.

Today, we see this tension manifest in various ways. Contemporary debates on social justice, environmental stewardship, and inclusion within the Church sometimes create divisions. Pope Francis’ call to care for the marginalised, address the climate crisis, and build a more synodal Church has sparked both support and resistance. This reflects Jesus’ words that His coming would cause division, as the Gospel invites us to confront our comfort zones and make tough choices for the sake of love and justice.

In our daily lives, we are called to discern whether we are following Christ wholeheartedly, even when it leads to discomfort or conflict. The “fire” Jesus speaks of can be seen as the Holy Spirit at work, purifying and transforming both our hearts and society. As disciples, we must embrace this fire, allowing it to reshape our priorities and lead us toward a more faithful and courageous witness to the Gospel.

我們始終在祂面前

在今天的福音經文，耶穌談論了警醒和責任。祂呼籲我們時刻做好準備，迎接吾主的來臨。祂提醒我們：我們是天主恩典的管家，不論我們是否能直接感受到祂的臨在，都必須正直行事。這段福音經文邀請我們：把天主的生活劃分成不同的部分 —— 感覺到“神聖”和“世俗”的時刻。然而，真正的原則就是：承認天主臨在於我們生活中的每時每刻。不論救主在不在，我們都始終活在天主眼中。
這個不忠的僕人，恰恰代表的就是那些令人陷入危險的自滿。他意識到救主回來了，但怠於準備，認為他還有許多時間。這也反映出我們存在的拖延精神，輕看了我們要承擔的責任，我們認為：可以以後再專注天主。耶穌警告我們：持有這樣的態度，極其危險 —— 生命是脆弱的，我們那要我們交帳的日子和時間。
此外，不忠的僕人，他所順從的是自己的意願，輕看了託付給他的人。這突顯了我們要服務他人，特別要服務那些處於急難中的人。耶穌要求我們做忠信的僕人，應該優先考慮天主的旨意，而非自己的願想，要意識到：我們應該對那些關心我們的人承擔自己的責任。

最後，福音經文提醒我們：將會有審判。這不是在灌輸我們恐懼，而是邀請我們過上積極的信仰生活，採取各樣行動回應天主的愛。因此，要警醒，度正直的生活，忠信於天主的召叫，不是出於害怕天主的懲罰，而是出於愛，並要知道：我們常在祂的面前。

Or Optional Memorial of Saint John of Capistrano, Priest
Luke 12:39-48
We are always in His presence

In today’s passage of the Gospel, Jesus speaks about vigilance and responsibility, calling us to live in constant readiness for the Master’s return. He reminds us that we are stewards of God’s gifts and that we must act with integrity, whether or not we feel His immediate presence. This Gospel challenges the common habit of dividing life into compartments—where some moments feel “sacred” and others “secular.” True discipleship, however, recognises that God is present in every moment of our lives. There is no time when the Master is away, and we always live in the sight of God.

The unfaithful servant represents the danger of complacency. He acknowledges the Master’s return but delays his readiness, assuming there is more time. This reflects our tendency to postpone spiritual growth or ignore our responsibilities, thinking we can focus on God later. Jesus warns that such an attitude is dangerous—life is fragile, and we do not know when we will be called to account.

Moreover, the unfaithful servant follows his own will, neglecting the people entrusted to him. This highlights the importance of our mission to serve others, especially those in need. Faithful stewardship requires us to prioritise God’s will over our own desires, recognising that we are accountable for how we treat those in our care.

In the end, the Gospel reminds us that there will be judgment. This is not to instil fear but to invite us into a life of active faith, where every action is lived in response to God’s love. Vigilance, then, is about living with integrity and being faithful to God’s call, not out of fear of punishment but out of love and awareness that we are always in His presence.
