Purpose-driven life

In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues to address the end times and the coming of the Kingdom. He calls His followers to prepare themselves, to be vigilant and mindful, even though the exact time is unknown and not for them to determine. Instead of focusing on when this time will come, Jesus emphasises the importance of being ready in heart and spirit, grounded in His words and living them daily. The Gospel reminds us that while we live our everyday lives, we should not allow routine, consumerism, or distractions to numb us from our relationship with God.

In His teachings, Jesus compares our lives to the days of Noah and Lot, when people were so engrossed in their daily routines that they overlooked God’s presence and the need to respond. Similar to those in Noah’s and Lot’s times, we too risk missing God’s call if we aren’t vigilant. Our response to God’s call shall not be rooted in fear or speculation about the “end times,” but it helps us to live purposefully, keeping eternity in mind.

Jesus also teaches that clinging to earthly life too tightly leads to spiritual loss. Instead, true life is found in generosity and self-giving. “Whoever loses their life will save it.” We are called to trust God and live with open hearts, caring for others and trusting in the promise of God’s eternal Kingdom.

When Jesus speaks of “one being taken and the other left,” it serves as a call to nurture our relationship with God daily, regardless of external influences or worldly distractions. Spiritual death attracts judgment just as vultures gather around what is dead. Reflecting on our times, we must question ourselves whether we are able to see beyond these distractions to live in preparation for God’s Kingdom.

Thursday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 17: 20-25
Discerning God’s will

In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses the Pharisees on the coming of God’s Kingdom, offering a vision that challenges traditional expectations. The Pharisees thought the Kingdom would appear dramatically as an outcome of perfect adherence to the Law. They anticipated the Messiah’s arrival to be marked by a great spectacle, hailed as a mighty king. In contrast, Jesus reveals an unexpected reality: the Kingdom of God exists already within us, intricately integrated into our everyday lives and does not depend on human actions or achievements.

The Kingdom’s presence, as Jesus teaches, cannot be observed outwardly or in specific locations. Rather, it’s a concealed truth, thriving in gratitude, love, and acts of kindness that often go unnoticed. In these modest instances, the Kingdom unveils itself as a deep mystery that surpasses worldly anticipations.

Looking to the future, Jesus warns of those who might deceive the believers, claiming to know the precise time or place of His return. He teaches that the Day of the Son of Man will come suddenly and unmistakably, “like lightning flashing across the sky.” In times of trial and despair, the apocalyptic language used by Jesus helps us maintain hope and understand that God remains in control, even when circumstances suggest otherwise. Though the journey may pass through hardship and suffering, God’s plans will reach fulfilment.

Finally, Jesus underscores that the path to glory inevitably includes the Cross, a truth central to our faith. Just as Jesus endured suffering, we are called to bear our own crosses. Through these challenges, we are invited to deepen our trust in God and find evidence of His Kingdom within our own lives, communities and in acts of compassion and faithfulness around us.

Coffee with God: 13 November 2024

Wednesday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time*
Luke 17: 11-19
Gratitude is a basic Christian attitude

In today’s Gospel, Luke recounts the healing of ten lepers, yet only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus. This passage emphasises gratitude—a central theme for Luke, who often portrays people praising God for Jesus’ miracles. Gratitude is an essential attitude for Christians, recognising every blessing as a gift from God. The Samaritan leper’s return to give thanks shows a deep sense of God’s grace, transcending mere rituals or personal merit.

Jesus meets a group of lepers as he travels to Jerusalem through Samaria and Galilee. Theycall out from a distance because society rejected them as they were regarded as cursed by God. However, they demonstrate their faith in His mercy. Jesus tells them to presentthemselves to the priests, and as they go, they are healed. Their journey symbolises the faith journey, trusting in Jesus’ word even without seeing any immediate results.

The Samaritan’s reaction showcases the openness that Jesus wishes to see in His followers. While the others continue on, perhaps feeling entitled to their healing, the Samaritan comesback to give glory to God. This outsider understands his healing as an act of pure grace, aware that he has no personal claim to it. Jesus seizes this moment to illustrate that gratitude fosters a deeper relationship with God, enabling us to recognize His generosity throughoutour lives.

Through this example, the Samaritan serves as a role model for anyone called to embrace a grateful heart. His reaction shows us that faith and gratitude are deeply interconnected. Genuine discipleship requires us to acknowledge God’s presence in every aspect of life and to maintain an attitude of constant thankfulness. We are invited to extend this gift to others, helping them recognize that every moment offers a chance to celebrate God’s grace.

Memorial of Saint Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr
Luke 17: 7-10
Greatness lies in service

In today’s Gospel, Jesus shares a parable unique to Luke, teaching us the essence of a life dedicated to service. Through three rhetorical questions, Jesus draws on everyday life to illustrate how we, like the servants in His parables, are called to serve without expectation of reward. He asks, “Which of you, with a servant ploughing or tending sheep, would say, ‘Come at once to sit down and eat?’” The answer is obvious: no one would. The master, instead, instructs the servant to prepare his meal first and eat only afterwards.

Jesus uses these questions to shift our perspective, encouraging us to approach our duties as acts of humble service. He concludes, “When you have done all you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’” Jesus Himself embodied this spirit of service: “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45).

This call to service aligns with the faith of the poor and humble in Jesus’ time, who awaited a Messiah not as a mighty ruler, but as a humble servant. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary, in her fiat, embodies this ideal: “I am the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). Jesus, at His baptism and transfiguration, is affirmed by the Father as the Servant who fulfills Isaiah’s prophecies of God’s humble servant.

As disciples, we too are invited to embrace this role, serving others and awaiting the day when the Lord, our Master, will serve us at His heavenly banquet (Luke 12:37). Like St. Paul, we remember that in our work, God alone brings growth (1 Corinthians 3:7). True greatness in the Kingdom of God lies in service, where only God’s grace completes the work we begin.
