Thursday of the First Week of Advent
Matthew 7:21, 24-27
Building Faith on Rock, Not Sand”

Jesus reminds us of the importance of building our lives on a firm foundation of faith. Those who hear His words and act on them are likewise builders who construct their houses on rock, resilient against the storms of life. In contrast, those who merely listen without action build on sand, leaving their lives vulnerable to collapse.

This passage challenges us to reflect on the depth of our discipleship. Pope Francis warns against being “fair-weather Christians,” whose faith is superficial and fades under pressure. True faith requires effort, trust, and a willingness to act on the Gospel, even when it is difficult. The poor, often excluded from worldly privileges, teach us this lesson. Stripped of distractions, they rely on God as their foundation, demonstrating trust and resilience that inspires.

Spiritual poverty emerges when faith is treated as a mere tradition or cultural marker rather than a lived reality. As Pope Francis often preaches, “Faith without works is lifeless.” True discipleship involves embracing the cost—serving the vulnerable, seeking justice, and trusting God over worldly powers.

Jesus’ words remind us that storms are inevitable, whether personal, societal, or spiritual. Only a life grounded in God’s truth can endure. Like the psalmist, we must proclaim, “Better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” Faith built on the rock of Christ withstands the winds of hardship and remains a testimony to hope.

Let us build wisely, trusting not in fleeting riches or power but in the eternal foundation of God’s love, allowing our lives to become houses of refuge for others in their storms.

耶穌透過兩個意義深遠的舉動揭示天主溫柔的心:醫治破碎的人,使饑餓的人得到飽飫。這些奧跡提醒我們:天主不僅臨於屬靈的生活中,也臨于我們現實的生活中。

依撒意亞有關盛筵的神視強調了這個真理:把天主的國描繪成富足和喜樂之所在。教宗方濟各經常談到接受一種純樸生活的重要性 —— 與他人共進一頓飯,享受受造物,以與他人相伴為樂。這些塵世的喜樂,對我們的信仰,並不妨礙,卻是天主良善的輝映。正如聖父教宗方濟各教導的那樣:“聖體聖事並非是純全之人的獎賞,而是對弱小者的滋養。”

在今天的福音經文中,耶穌治好病人,恢復他們充分體驗美好生活的能力,使他們看到大自然的色彩,聽到孩子們的笑聲,自由與親人同行。這強調了人類健康的聖潔性,醫療保健人員的崇高使命。教宗方濟各把他們稱作“生命的守護者。”他們的工作所反映的是基督醫治的職份,他們把身體當作天主所造一部分,對其尊嚴予以尊重。

Breaking Bread, Healing Hearts

Jesus reveals the tenderness of God’s heart through two profound acts: healing the broken and feeding the hungry. These miracles remind us that God is present not only in the spiritual but also in the physical realities of our lives.

Isaiah’s vision of a festive banquet underscores this truth, portraying the Kingdom of God as a place of abundance and joy. Pope Francis often speaks of the importance of embracing life’s simple blessings—sharing a meal, savouring creation, and delighting in the company of others. These earthly joys are not distractions from faith but reflections of God’s goodness. As the Holy Father teaches, “The Eucharist is not a reward for the perfect but nourishment for the weak.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ healing of the sick restores their ability to fully experience life’s beauty—seeing the colours of nature, hearing the laughter of children, and walking freely with loved ones. This underscores the sanctity of human health and the noble mission of healthcare professionals, whom Pope Francis calls “custodians of life.” Their work mirrors Christ’s healing ministry, honouring the dignity of the body as part of God’s creation.

When Jesus multiplies the loaves and fishes, He prefigures the Eucharist, the “daily bread” that sustains our souls. Like the crowd who left satisfied, we too are nourished at the Lord’s table, gaining strength for life’s journey. The Mass is where heaven touches earth, making our burdens lighter and our hearts brighter.

This Gospel invites us to embrace both the spiritual and physical aspects of life as sacred. Whether breaking bread with loved ones, caring for the sick, or receiving the Eucharist, we encounter the God who feeds, heals, and rejoices with us.

耶穌因聖神而歡喜,讚頌天父,因為祂並沒有把自己的真理揭示給有學識的和有權勢的人,而是揭示給那些肖似孩童的人和謙遜的人。這段經文邀請我們反思謙遜,公義,生活在默西亞時代的巨大特權 —— 甚至先知和國王都渴望得到的物權。

依撒意亞有關和平和復興的願景掌握著默西亞時代的精髓,那是一個到處洋溢著公義,受造界彌散和平的時代。教宗方濟各提醒我們:這樣的和諧始自我們的內心,謙德在那裡使我們向天主的恩典敞開心扉。聖父教宗在他的講道中經常強調“小子”的重要性,這些“小子”就是信賴天主的智慧,而非依賴他們自己的勇力或才智的人。只有謙遜的人才能真正完全領受天主之國的公義和仁慈。

Luke 10:21-24

Seeing through the eyes of the Messiah

Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit, praising the Father for revealing His truth not to the learned and powerful but to the childlike and humble. This passage invites us to reflect on humility, justice, and the profound privilege of living in the age of the Messiah—a privilege even prophets and kings longed to see.

Isaiah’s vision of harmony and restoration captures the essence of the messianic age, a time when justice flows abundantly and peace permeates creation. Pope Francis reminds us that this harmony begins in the heart, where humility opens us to God’s grace. In his homilies, the Holy Father often emphasises the importance of being “little ones”—those who rely on God rather than their own strength or intellect. Only the humble can truly embrace the radical justice and mercy of God’s kingdom.

In a world fractured by inequality and indifference, the messianic age calls us to mirror Christ’s vision of justice. Public leaders are called upon to govern with integrity, giving voice to the voiceless and ensuring justice for the marginalised. As Pope Francis challenges us, “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?” Justice, in the spirit of Christ, must prioritise the vulnerable.

As disciples, our mission is to build a world where the poor find dignity and abundance, where the voiceless sing with joy. The greatest gift of this age is not power or wealth but seeing God’s justice unfold in the lives of the least. Blessed are we who see through the eyes of the Messiah, for ours is the kingdom of heaven.

我們進入了將臨期,今天的讀經突顯了天主的無限憐憫以及祂對和平和復興所懷的願景。在讀經一,依撒意亞先知展望了一個未來,破壞將成為復興的墊石。即使是在悲傷的時刻,天主依舊會展開救贖計畫,保護祂忠信的遺民。熙雍,天主臨在的聖山,有著熠熠發光的希望燈塔。

然而,今天的福音經文邀請我們拓寬對天主王權的見解。一個羅馬百夫長 —— 他是權力的象徵,是以色列信仰的局外人 —— 面對耶穌,他極其謙卑,極其信賴。儘管存在文化和宗教上的障礙,他的信德吸引他來到基督面前,祂的僕人也因此獲得痊癒。耶穌對百夫長的信德感到驚訝,宣稱他的信德比祂在以色列人身上找到的信德都要大。在這個瞬間,福音經文揭示了天主的國度沒有邊界;它對所有誠意尋求祂的人開放。

在這個將臨期,我們受邀效法百夫長的謙遜和信德,承認基督臨在於神聖和日常場所。正如以色列人登上熙雍山一樣,身處於教會內的我們,也需要一個片刻的寧靜時刻,好能與天主相會。然而,我們的信仰也催迫我們進到生活的市場,與那在我們的世界,要求我們對那始料未及的請求作出回應,對其表示關愛之人身上顯示的基督相遇。

我們為救主的來臨做準備,不只在耶誕節做此準備,也要準備好我們的信仰,使我們能在生活中的每時每刻滿足那些急難之人的急需,每時每刻準備好跨越愛的界限,每時每刻改變我們的生活。

我們怎樣才能如同百夫長那樣,在謙遜和信德中不斷成長?
那在這個將臨期召叫我把祂的臨在帶入他人的生活的基督在哪裡呢?

Monday of the First Week of Advent
Matthew 8:5-11
Lord, only say the word, and I shall be healed.

As we enter the season of Advent, today’s readings highlight God’s infinite mercy and His vision for peace and restoration. In the first reading, the Prophet Isaiah envisions a future where devastations serve as a stepping stone to renewal. Even in times of tragedy, God’s saving plan unfolds, preserving His faithful remnant. Zion, the holy mountain of God’s presence, shines as a beacon of hope.

Yet today’s Gospel challenges us to broaden our understanding of God’s reign. A Roman centurion—a symbol of power and an outsider to Israel’s faith—demonstrates profound humility and trust in Jesus. Despite cultural and religious barriers, his faith draws him to Christ, and his servant is healed. Jesus marvels at the centurion’s faith, declaring it greater than any he has found in Israel. In this moment, the Gospel reveals that God’s kingdom knows no boundaries; it is open to all who seek him with sincere hearts.

This Advent, we are invited to emulate the centurion’s humility and faith, acknowledging Christ’s presence in both holy and everyday settings. Similar to the Israelites rising to Mount Zion, we require moments of stillness in the Church to meet God. However, our faith should also propel us into the marketplace of life, where unforeseen requests for assistance and gestures of love manifest Christ in our world.

We prepare for the coming of the Lord—not only at Christmas but in every moment where faith meets need, love crosses boundaries, and hope transforms lives.
