Third Sunday of Advent
Luke 3: 10-18
Prepare the Way: A Call to True Conversion and Compassion

In today’s Gospel, the crowds approach John the Baptist with a profound question: “What should we do?” This question echoes through the ages, especially as we face the challenges of modern life—inequality, indifference, and a culture that often prioritises material success over love and service. John’s response is startling in its simplicity and relevance: “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.”

This Advent, as we prepare for the coming of Christ, the call to conversion resounds. True conversion is not merely a shift in outward behaviours but a reordering of our hearts and priorities. Too often, we live with an upside-down scale of values—putting wealth, career, and comfort above faith and love. John reminds us that conversion means placing God and neighbour at the centre, bearing fruits that reflect this transformation.

The Gospel challenges us to confront sins we often overlook—sins of omission. When we ignore the hungry, fail to comfort the lonely, or turn away from injustice, we deny the love of God in our hearts. As James reminds us, “If you know how to do good and do not do it, it is sin” (James 4:17).

John’s message also speaks to every profession and vocation. Whether we are tax collectors, soldiers, or teachers, we are called to act with integrity, kindness, and a spirit of service. Conversion doesn’t mean abandoning our roles but transforming how we live them.

This Advent, let us prepare to welcome Christ with hearts purified by the “fire” of His Spirit. Allow the Gospel to act like a winnowing wind, removing selfishness and fear, and leaving only the grain of love and truth. Let us embrace this good news and live as witnesses of His Kingdom.

St John of the Cross
Matthew 17: 10-13
The mission of rebuilding community

After witnessing the Transfiguration, the disciples grapple with a profound question: if Jesus is the Messiah, why hasn’t Elijah returned as prophesied? Jesus reveals that Elijah has already come in the person of John the Baptist, whose mission was rejected and whose life was taken. Like Elijah, John prepared the way for the Lord, calling for repentance and the restoration of community—a mission so radical it threatened the existing power structures.

The life and mission of St. John of the Cross resonate deeply with this Gospel reflection. In a time when the Church needed renewal, St. John faced fierce opposition as he sought to reform the Carmelite Order. Like John the Baptist, his call for a return to spiritual purity and intimacy with God was seen as a threat to the comfortable norms of his era.

Jesus continues John’s mission, demonstrating through His life that the love of God and the love of neighbour are inseparable. His teachings challenge systems of oppression and call for a new way of living—one rooted in fraternity and mutual care. This mission, however, is dangerous, as it confronts the forces that benefit from division and exploitation. Like John, Jesus is rejected and ultimately put to death.

St. John of the Cross endured great suffering for this cause, including imprisonment and mistreatment by his own community. Yet, he remained steadfast, illuminating the path of transformation through his writings.

Both John the Baptist and St. John of the Cross demonstrate that renewal often comes through sacrifice. Their prophetic courage calls us to confront the forces that divide us—whether systems of injustice, consumerism, or complacency—and to rebuild a community rooted in love and solidarity.

Inspired by their example, we are called to embrace the Gospel’s challenge to live as agents of renewal, trusting that, through suffering and perseverance, God’s transformative work in us will bear fruit for His kingdom.

Memorial of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr
Matthew 11: 16-19
Faith over excuses: Embracing the Challenge of the Gospel

In the Gospel today, Jesus confronts the resistance of His generation to God’s message. Like stubborn children in a marketplace, they reject both John the Baptist and Jesus, inventing excuses to discredit them. John, with his austere lifestyle, is accused of being possessed. Jesus, who dines with sinners, is dismissed as a glutton and drunkard. Their reactions reveal a deeper issue: a refusal to embrace God’s surprising ways.

Pope Francis highlights how this resistance persists today. Leaders and communities, both in society and the Church, often resist challenges to their comfort or traditions. When faced with prophetic voices or new expressions of faith, they label them as disobedient or contrary to established norms. This tendency to cling to little traditions and rigid ideas stifles openness to the Holy Spirit’s work in our time.

Jesus exposes the inconsistency of these attitudes, comparing the critics to children demanding others dance to their tune. True wisdom, however, does not impose its own preferences but seeks God’s will with humility. Wisdom is not about controlling the narrative but discerning God’s presence in unexpected places and voices.

We are called to examine our own hearts. Are we consistent in living our faith, or do we fall into the same traps of prejudices and resistance? Faith requires a critical conscience, one that challenges injustice and seeks authentic renewal, both in society and within the Church.

The Gospel reminds us that divine wisdom is revealed to the humble and open-hearted. Let us lay aside pretexts and excuses, embracing the uncomfortable but life-giving message of the Gospel. May the Gospel challenge and transform us daily.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Luke 1: 26-38
A Mother’s Call to Renewed Faith and Hope

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe reminds us that God’s providence never ceases.

Through Mary, He manifests His tenderness and mercy in moments of great need, revealing His deep care for humanity. As Saint Paul writes in Galatians 4:4, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman.” Through Mary, the Eternal One entered our world, becoming “God-with-us” to walk alongside us in love and solidarity.

Nearly five centuries ago, in a time of upheaval in the Americas, God sent Mary to Tepeyac as the Mother of the “true God for whom we live.” She came not to exclude but to embrace all people, especially the poor and forgotten, with her motherly presence and consolation. Her apparition to Saint Juan Diego transformed a fractured world into fertile ground for the Gospel. Through her tender care, she brought dignity and hope to the oppressed.

Today, as we face the rumblings of war, injustice, and suffering, Mary continues to set out “in haste,” inviting us to trust in her Son and to abandon fear and indifference. She calls us to fraternity, urging us to reach out to the forgotten and discarded in our communities. Like Mary, we are called to act swiftly, with love and courage, to embody the Gospel.

As we journey toward the fifth centennial of the Guadalupian apparition, let us renew our commitment to Christ through Our Lady of Guadalupe. She desires to stay with us, guide us in becoming credible witnesses of Christ’s love, and build a culture of care and inclusion.

May Our Lady of Guadalupe lead us to her Son, that we may live with joy, hope, and peace, proclaiming: “Maranata! Come, Lord Jesus!”

Note:
in ORDO for the Celebration of Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours According to The Roman General Calendar Liturgy Year 2024-2025 issued by Liberia Editrice Vaticana, today the church celebrates Thursday of 2nd Week of Advent, also, celebrate the optional memorial of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In America, today is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
