The Nativity of the Lord
John 1: 1-18
The Word Made Flesh – the Light that guides us

The Prologue of John’s Gospel unveils the profound mystery of the Word becoming flesh, the light of God entering the world. From the creation narrative to the Incarnation, light symbolises God’s revelation, grace, and love. The Old Testament witnesses this divine illumination through figures like Abraham and Moses, preparing humanity for its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. John the Baptist stands as the final herald of this light, pointing toward the one who embodies grace and truth.

The Word, existing with the Father from the beginning, reveals God’s love in its fullness through the person of Jesus. As the Torah was for Israel a beacon of divine wisdom and life, so the Word becomes flesh, dwelling among us, making God’s glory visible and tangible. This is the ultimate epiphany: God’s glory is no longer confined to the Temple or the Tabernacle but revealed in the human frailty of Christ.

The mission of the Church today is to witness this light in the world, especially amidst darkness. Pope Francis’ emphasis on accompaniment, mercy, and the joy of the Gospel reflects the light of Christ’s presence that seeks out the lost and marginalised. The Eucharist, and the Word of become the visible sign of this light—a source of grace, communion, and transformation.

As we contemplate the Word-made flesh, we are invited to walk in the light, embracing our call to serve as witnesses. In Christ’s self-emptying love on the cross, we see the glory of God—a love without limits that transforms even death into life. May we reflect this light in our own lives, becoming beacons of hope, grace, and peace to a world yearning for God’s presence.

這首讚歌以對天主臨現於祂子民中間表達感激之情開篇,突顯了天主對他們的永恆之愛。讓我們思考一下:今天,一天開始的時候,我們詠唱的這首讚歌,為我們有何意涵。一夜的睡眠,我們緘默以後,天主容許我們再次開口發言,清晨,破曉時分,我們要獻上這樣的讚歌,使之燭照我們的生活,帶領我們走向和平。

藉著這首讚歌,我們使我們自己的使命與洗者聖若翰的使命保持一致,洗者若翰藉著給天主的救贖工程作證,純樸刻苦的生活,為天主預道了道路。因此,我們的日常任務,就是要使我們的聲音 —— 如同匝加利亞和他的兒子洗者若翰 —— 與我們遇到的每個人分享臨現的天主。

在匝加利亞讚歌中,他預見到:“旭日要從高天眷顧我們 ……”天主繼續與祂的百姓同在 —— 眷顧祂的子民。每個信徒都蒙召成為先知,為天主預備道路。

A Vision of Mercy, Peace, and Prophetic Hope

The Canticle of Zechariah, also known as the Benedictus, offers a reflection on God’s fidelity and mercy. Rooted in the faith of the early Christian community, this hymn of praise celebrates the fulfilment of divine promises, and the Church uses this daily in the morning prayers.
The Canticle of Praise opens with expressions of gratitude for God’s presence among His people, highlighting His eternal love for them. Let’s consider what it signifies for us today to sing this song of praise at the beginning of each day. After a night of sleep that metaphorically silences us, God allows us to speak again, and one of our first acts is to offer this blessing as the dawn breaks to illuminate our lives and lead us to peace.

In Benedictus, we align ourselves with the mission of St. John the Baptist, who prepared the way for the Lord by witnessing God’s salvation and living simply and penitently. Our daily task, then, is to use our voices—like Zechariah and his son, John the Baptist—to share God’s presence with everyone we encounter.

In the song of Zachariah, he foresees that: “the sun that rises from above will visit us …”. God continues to be with his people – visit his people. And each faithful receives the call to be the prophet to prepare the ways of God.

Would you dare to make a song to the Lord for the mercies you have received in abundance from your God? Are you joining this beautiful mission to which the Lord invites you to? Do you have a beautiful wish as you move on to celebrate Christmas?

路加福音以兩個奧跡般的非凡誕生故事 —— 洗者若翰和耶穌的誕生—— 開篇,這標誌著天主救贖計畫中的關鍵時刻。路加把這些事件描繪成天主對忠信於祂的匝加利亞,瑪利亞和若瑟許下的恩許,得以實現。這些人的體驗向我們表明:天主經常在日常生活中通過簡單和分享人類經驗的時刻工作。

教宗方濟各強調團體和陪伴的重要性:這反映出作為天主子民,在教會內同行的共同喜樂和共同信仰。依撒伯爾和瑪利亞的相遇,突顯了相互支持,能使彼此發生轉變的力量,也突顯了天主臨在於這樣的關係中。同樣,教宗方濟各也邀請我們建立同道偕行的團體,通過對話加深我們的信仰和見證。

給若翰取名特別引人注目。依撒伯爾對社會期望的反抗,匝加利亞對天使訊息的確認,反映他們對天主的新工程敞開心扉。教宗方濟各繼續提醒我們:接納令人感到驚訝的聖神,超越僵化的結構,以新的方式為福音作證。在當今不斷變化的世界,為尋求解決社會,生活和精神挑戰的教會而言,這樣的開放,至關重要。

Luke 1: 57-66
The births that changed history

The Gospel of Luke opens with the exceptional story of two miraculous births—John and Jesus—which marks a crucial moment in God’s salvation plan. Luke depicts these events as the realisation of divine promises brought to life by faithful figures: Zechariah and Elizabeth, along with Mary and Joseph. The experiences of these individuals show us that God often works in everyday life through simple and shared moments of human experience.

Pope Francis emphasises the importance of community and accompaniment that reflect a communal joy and shared faith in a Church that walks together as the People of God. Elizabeth’s and Mary’s encounter highlights the transformative power of mutual support and the presence of God in relationships. Similarly, Pope Francis invites us to build synodal communities where dialogue and shared mission deepen our faith and witness.

The naming of John is particularly striking. Elizabeth’s defiance of societal expectations and Zechariah’s affirmation of the angel’s message reflect an openness to the newness of God’s work. Pope Francis continually reminds us to embrace the surprises of the Spirit and to move beyond rigid structures to witness the Gospel in fresh ways. In today’s rapidly changing world, this openness is crucial as the Church seeks to address social, ecological, and spiritual challenges.

Luke’s use of faith as a lens—like an X-ray—encourages us to see beyond the surface of life’s events to perceive God’s hidden hand. Do we, like Luke, view our lives through the lens of faith, discerning God’s presence even in our moments of struggles? Let us strive tocultivate communities of faith, joy, and courage, living out the Gospel in the spirit of the two miraculous births that changed history forever.

窮人是天主深愛的人

將臨期第四主日邀請我們反思天主對窮人和謙遜之人的非凡偏愛。聖詠作者說:“因為我貧窮,求禰應允我。”(參看:詠86(85):1)這提醒我們:引起天主關注和愛的,不是那些有財富的,或有地位的,而是那些純樸的人和心胸開闊的人。與那些要求證書和功績的人世俗掌權者不同,天主接納那些宣認自己需要祂的人。

縱觀救恩史,天主的工作在那些最不顯眼的和最卑微的人身上最明顯。米該亞預言說:以色列的統治者要出自白冷,一個不起眼的小村子(參看:米5:1-4A)瑪利亞的謝主曲與天主的模式相回應,她宣稱天主是怎樣高舉那些謙遜的人,使饑餓之人飽饗美物(參看:路1:46-55)她對依撒伯爾所做的回應表明了她堅定的信仰:“相信上主的話定會應驗的人真是有福。”(參看:路1:45)瑪利亞的神貧使她成了新的結約之櫃,把那與她同在的天主帶到世上。

Fourth Sunday of Advent
Luke 1:39-48
The poor are God’s beloved

The Fourth Sunday of Advent invites us to reflect on God’s extraordinary preference for the poor and the humble. The Psalmist prays, “Answer me, for I am poor” (Ps 86:1), reminding us that God’s attention and love are drawn not by wealth or status but by the simplicity and openness of the human heart. Unlike worldly rulers who demand credentials and merit, God embraces those who acknowledge their need for Him.


Throughout salvation history, God’s work shines most brightly through the insignificant and the lowly. Micah foretells that the ruler of Israel will come from Bethlehem, a small and unremarkable village (Mic 5:1-4a). Mary’s Magnificat echoes this divine pattern, proclaiming how God exalts the humble and fills the hungry with good things (Luke 1:46-55). Her response to Elizabeth’s greeting reveals her deep faith: “Blessed is she who believed that the Lord’s words to her would be fulfilled” (Luke 1:45). Mary’s poverty of spirit allowed her to become the new Ark of the Covenant, carrying God’s presence to the world.


In the second reading, the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that true worship is not found in sacrifices and offerings but in doing the will of God (Heb 10:5-10). Jesus, through His complete surrender to the Father’s will, reveals the path to authentic discipleship. He invites us to join Him in trusting God’s promises and allowing His Spirit to work through our lives.


This Advent, we are called to recognise our own poverty and to welcome God’s grace with open hearts. Just as Mary trusted in God’s word, we, too must believe that His promises will be fulfilled. Let us proclaim with confidence: “Great things will the Lord do for the poor who trust in Him.” As we prepare for Christ’s coming, may we embody His peace and joy, becoming instruments of His love to a waiting world.
