John 1: 35-42
A Call to “Come and See”

Today’s Gospel reveals an intimate moment of encounter between Jesus and his first disciples, Andrew and another unnamed follower. This passage offers lessons for us as Catholics navigating the challenges of modern life.

As Jesus passes by, John the Baptist proclaims, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Two of John’s disciples begin to follow Jesus, curious but uncertain. How often does Jesus “pass by” in our daily lives—in moments of quiet, in the needs of others, or in unexpected blessings? Do we notice him? And when we do, how do we respond?

Jesus turns and asks, “What are you looking for?” This question is not just for Andrew and his companion but for each of us. What are we truly seeking in life? Is it comfort, success, or deeper meaning? Our answers reveal much about our relationship with God and our purpose as disciples.

When the disciples ask where Jesus stays, he responds, “Come and see.” Jesus invites them—and us—not to a static understanding but to an active, personal relationship. He calls us to discover him in our lives: in prayer, Scripture, the Eucharist, and the faces of those we meet. Where do we believe Jesus “stays” today?

After his time with Jesus, Andrew is filled with joy. He seeks out his brother Simon and exclaims, “We have found the Messiah!” Genuine discipleship urges us to share Christ’s love with those around us. Similar to Andrew, we are called to evangelise—to help our family, friends, and even strangers come face to face with Jesus.

Let us reflect on the people who have guided us to Jesus and ask how we can invite others to “come and see” the Saviour who walks beside us each day. May our lives testify to the joy of encountering Christ.

Witnesses of the Lamb: Mission in Our Lives

John the Baptist introduces Jesus as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” This title reveals Jesus’ dual identity as Lord and Servant. As Catholics grappling with the distractions and challenges of modern life, we are invited to rediscover Jesus and embrace his mission as our own.

Jesus, the Son of God, humbles himself to stand among sinners. He embodies perfect love through his self-sacrifice, liberating us from sin and calling us to new life. The image of the Lamb recalls the Passover, where the blood of a lamb delivered the Israelites from death and slavery. In Jesus, this symbolism is fulfilled—his blood becomes the source of salvation for all humanity. Amid our struggles, this truth reminds us that Jesus walks with us, not as a distant God but as our Saviour, Brother, and Friend.

Jesus came to bring light and salvation to a world overshadowed by sin and despair. His mission was not limited to his time; it continues today through his disciples, through us. To follow Jesus is to share his light in our homes, workplaces, and communities. The challenges we face—indifference, division, or a culture resistant to faith—are opportunities to bear witness to his love.

Discipleship calls us to deepen our relationship with Jesus, while apostleship challenges us to share his message. By living lives of humility, service, and love, we can inspire others to encounter Christ. Let us pray for courage and grace to fulfil this mission, building God’s Kingdom in a world yearning for hope and truth.

Preparing the Way through witnessing to the Word

In today’s Gospel, we encounter John the Baptist, a man fully aware of his role as a herald of Christ. When questioned by the religious authorities, John humbly denies being the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet. Instead, he identifies himself as “the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” John’s humility and purpose remind us of our call to prepare others to encounter Christ.

John’s baptism, centred on repentance and purification, pointed forward to the baptism of Jesus, which brings the Spirit of God into the hearts of believers. John’s acknowledgement that he is unworthy even to untie the sandals of the one coming after him teaches us reverence for the mission of Christ—a mission far greater than ourselves.

Like John, we are called to be witnesses to the Light. We are not the source of this Light but are meant to reflect it, guiding others toward the truth and love of Jesus. In doing so, we echo Christ’s words: “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). The example of John the Baptist challenges us to ask, ‘Do I allow the light of Christ to shine through me?’

John’s life of humility and dedication offers us a model. He embraced his role with clarity and conviction, focusing not on himself but on the One he served. In our lives, we too can be voices crying out in the wilderness of a world often clouded by darkness, preparing hearts to receive Jesus.

As we reflect on John’s example, let us seek to embody his courage and humility, ensuring that our actions and words lead others to recognise and follow Christ, the Light of the World.

Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God
The Octave Day of Christmas
Luke 2:16-21
New Year’s Day: The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

New Year’s Day, symbolising fresh starts and resolutions, holds a spiritual meaning as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. On this final day of the Christmas Octave and the World Day of Peace, the Church encourages us to recognise Mary’s significant role in salvation history and to seek her motherly intercession as we enter the uncertainties of a new year

Pope Francis’ reflection on this Gospel passage in 2022 offers us a beautiful insight: Mary teaches us to “keep and ponder.” In the Gospel, she treasures everything—the joyful moments like the angel’s announcement and the shepherds’ adoration, but also the challenging realities, such as the uncertainty of giving birth in a humble stable. Mary doesn’t seek to evade life’s trials or exaggerate its joys; she embraces all with a heart open to God’s mysterious work.

Throughout history, the Church has compared Mary to a guiding star for Christians, reminding us that her steadfast faith in God’s promises can light our way through life’s uncertainties. In her, we discover the strength to face challenges and the hope for resurrection after every hardship.

In this Jubilee Year as “Pilgrims of Hope,” let us take inspiration from Mary. Just as mariners steer toward the light of a star, may we fix our gaze on Mary, the Star of the Sea, and navigate the coming year with her example of faith, love, and peace.

At the start of this new year, let us place ourselves under her protection, entrusting our joys, struggles, and aspirations to her maternal care. May she guide us to deepen our hope and strengthen our resolve to follow Christ throughout this year and beyond. Amen.
