Friday in the Fifth Week of Lent
Gospel: John 10:31-42

Today is Friday of the Fifth Week of Lent. The passage from the Gospel according to Saint John continues to present the dialogue between Jesus and the Jews.

We often judge those around us by our own standards, choosing friends from those who obey us and viewing those who do not conform to our wishes as enemies. At times, we may even act like those Jews, unwilling to accept those who, following their conscience, do what the Lord considers good—even if they do not submit to our desires (cf. John 10:31-33). This is because we refuse to embrace the light of the World (cf. John 8:12), preferring to remain enslaved to the ruler of this world and his minions.

In reality, a perfect Christian does not live by their own will, nor do they judge others arbitrarily by their own standards. Instead, they strive to imitate Christ in every aspect of life, fulfilling the will of God the Father. Those who act according to God’s holy will no longer follow the cravings of the flesh, which alienates them from God and makes them His enemies. Rather, they are guided by the Holy Spirit, longing to receive God’s Word and the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, uniting perfectly with Him. They no longer see God with mortal, earthly eyes but with immortal, spiritual ones. Their actions are no longer as fickle as those of people living in a transient world; instead, they resemble Jesus Christ, always fulfilling God’s will. Through their lives, others see the face of the merciful Father, come to believe in the Word of God preached by Jesus Christ, and resolve to join Him in building the Kingdom of God in this passing world.

The Kingdom of God spoken of by Jesus is a kingdom where the only God is the God of love, a kingdom cantered entirely on God, where there are no more political parties or classes—only the God who loves and the people loved by God. Those who belong to this Kingdom no longer pursue personal gain but the good of all.

As we draw closer to Holy Week, let us now offer this prayer to God:

O God, who in this season give your Church the grace to imitate devoutly the Blessed Virgin Mary in contemplating the Passion of Christ, grant, we pray, through her intercession, that we may cling more firmly each day to your Only Begotten Son and come at last to the fullness of his grace. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever

Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent
Gospel: John 8:51-59

Today is the Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent. The passage from the Gospel of Saint John describes a conversation between Jesus and the Jews shortly before His Passion.

In the Jews who spoke with Jesus, we see a reflection of ourselves—for we often act like them, interpreting God’s Word according to our own thoughts. The reason the Jews thought Jesus was “possessed” (cf. John 8:52) was because He said to them: “Whoever keeps my word will never see death” (John 8:51). To them, human life is finite and can never be extended indefinitely; thus, they understood Jesus’ words as: “Whoever keeps Jesus’ words will never taste death” (John 8:52). They did not believe that Jesus was God, greater than Abraham.

Jesus wants to tell us: If we want to live, we must unite ourselves closely with Him through receiving His Baptism, the Holy Spirit He shares with the Father, the Eucharist (His Body and Blood given out of love for us), the Scriptures, prayer, and the practice of charity. For only then can we receive the full nourishment of His life from the Eucharist, which we share together. He wants to tell us even more: Whoever keeps His word, receives His Baptism, and receives the Holy Spirit He shares with the Father—though living in this changing world—has already entered the world of God. In God’s world, all are alive.

As Jesus said: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, he of whom you say, ‘He is our God,’ and you do not know him. But I know him, and if I were to say that I do not know him, I would be like you, a liar. But I do know him, and I keep his word” (John 8:54-55). If we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit and desire what the Holy Spirit desires, we will be able to rely on the Holy Spirit to mortify the unruly impulses of the flesh and completely break free from the bondage brought by sin. Then, we will be satisfied by prefiguring the world of God on earth and experiencing all the good things that God’s Word gives us.

Be near, O Lord, to those who plead before you, and look kindly on those who place their hope in your mercy, that, cleansed from the stain of their sins, they may persevere in holy living and be made full heirs of your promise. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord
Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. The Gospel at Mass is taken from the dialogue between the Angel and the Blessed Virgin Mary, as recounted by Saint Luke.

First, Saint Luke tells us that the one who spoke with the Blessed Virgin Mary was the Angel Gabriel (cf. Lk 1:26). What kind of angel is he? The angel himself tells us: “I am Gabriel, who stand before God” (cf. Lk 1:19A). Pope Saint Gregory the Great teaches us that the word “angel” refers to an office, not to a nature. Those heavenly, divine spiritual beings, though always spiritual, are only called angels when they are transmitting a message. Furthermore, those who transmit lesser messages are called angels, while those who announce the most important messages are called archangels. Therefore, the one sent to Mary was not merely an angel, but the Archangel Gabriel. Only an archangel could fittingly proclaim the greatest of messages.

What can we see in the dialogue between the Angel and the Blessed Virgin Mary as recounted by Saint Luke?
First: The angel said to her, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you!” (cf. Lk 1:28). This highlights Mary’s extraordinary dignity and foreshadows how her mission is intertwined with that of our Lord Jesus Christ. Mary is the New Eve. The first Eve, through the temptation of the devil, led the first Adam to transgress God’s commandment and eat of the forbidden fruit. Similarly, the second Eve accompanied the second Adam—our Lord Jesus Christ—who, on the Cross, made reparation for the original sin committed by the first Adam and all his descendants, reconciling humanity and all creation wounded by human sin with God.

Second: The angel said to Mary, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (cf. Lk 1:29-33). Such expressions are perfectly confirmed by the words of Jesus Himself in the dialogue with the Jews during Lent, as recorded by Saint John. Jesus continually revealed His relationship with the Father and continued to fulfill the mission entrusted to Him by the Father.

Third: Instead of feeling proud at the prospect of becoming the Mother of God, Mary, with humble submission to God’s holy will, replied with joy: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her (cf. Lk 1:38). With this response, the work of God’s redemption thus began in human history.

Dearly beloved brothers and sisters: God also calls us; He calls us to walk with Him. Let us imitate the Blessed Virgin Mary, to always walk with Him at all times and in all places, whatever our circumstances may be, and to be pilgrims of hope, bringing hope to others and to the world. Now, let us together offer our prayer to God:

O God, who willed that your Word
should take on the reality of human flesh
in the womb of the Virgin Mary,
grant, we pray,
that we, who confess our Redeemer to be God and man,
may merit to become partakers even in his divine nature.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.

March 24, 2026
Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent
Gospel: John 8:21–30

Today’s Gospel reading continues the dialogue between Jesus and the Pharisees, as recorded in the Gospel of Saint John. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on it.

We often live in this world according to our own preferences, choosing the way we think best suits us. In our view, if we can pass through this life in peace and security, nothing more is needed. The security we seek is, in fact, the complete possession of all that belongs to this world—its power, its influence, and the vanity it offers. This is precisely what the Jews of Jesus’ time were seeking: they longed for a political Messiah who would lead them to victory over the Roman Empire and restore the former glory of Israel. Clearly, their ultimate goal was very different from the end that Jesus came to offer them.

In the Church today, such attitudes are not uncommon. We often present Jesus in the image we desire. For example, if a catechumen refuses to follow the pastoral arrangements made by the parish, some catechists may portray Jesus as a God of strict justice. Likewise, in a parish where there have been no new baptisms for many years, those responsible for catechesis may present Jesus as a healer of every physical ailment, in order to attract people to the church. But when these catechumens discover that the Jesus they hear about in the Liturgy of the Word is quite different from the one they were taught in the catechism class, they may choose to leave—choosing instead the Jesus proclaimed to them through His Church, founded upon Saint Peter.

Some readers often ask me: “To whom do we belong?” My response is this: before receiving the baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we belonged to this world, which is passing away. But once we have received the baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God, we no longer belong to this world—just as Jesus Himself does not belong to this world. Since we belong to Jesus, our words and actions must be consistent with Him. Only then can we proclaim everything Jesus has taught us completely, faithfully, and in its fullness.

Grant us, we pray, O Lord, perseverance in obeying your will, that in our days the people dedicated to your service may grow in both merit and number. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever
