Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Matthew 13: 24-30
Everything has its time
Today we celebrate Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Though the Gospels do not mention them by name, Christian tradition tells us of their patience, faith, and quiet holiness. In them, we see the beauty of God’s grace working in time, especially in the hidden lives of those who persevere in love and trust.
The Gospel reminds us that the Kingdom of God is like a field where good seed is sown, but where weeds also grow. This is true in our hearts as well. God sows His Word in us—seeds of peace, mercy, and hope—but alongside them, weeds of selfishness, fear, and pride may also sprout. This is why we must learn the art of discernment. We must ask: What helps me grow in love? What chokes the joy God wants to give me? What must I keep, and what must I gently let go?
But let us not rush. As Jesus teaches, we must allow time to reveal what is true. In this world of fast results and instant gratification, the Gospel calls us to patience. It is only with time that fruit ripens, and the difference between wheat and weeds becomes clear.
Finally, when the moment is right, we must act. With gentle courage, we are called to uproot what does not help us to love—to let go of bitterness, distractions, and habits that steal our peace. Not in haste, but with the calm that comes from trusting in God’s timing.
Let us ask Saints Joachim and Anne to help us be faithful sowers of love in our families and in our hearts—patient, discerning, and always open to the quiet work of grace.
