Blessed are the little ones: recovering the wonder of God’s love
Today’s Gospel (Mt 11:25) invites us to pause and praise: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the wise and learned and revealing them to little ones.” What a beautiful prayer from the heart of Jesus! He rejoices because God chooses to reveal His love, not to the proud and powerful, but to the humble, the poor in spirit, the ones with childlike hearts.
What are “these things” Jesus is talking about? They are the quiet miracles that often go unnoticed: the blind who see, the lepers who are cleansed, the poor who are lifted up. These are not just physical signs, but signs of a God who heals, who frees, who loves without conditions. But not everyone sees. In cities like Chorazin and Capernaum, people witnessed miracles and still turned away. Why? Because their hearts were full of themselves—no room for God.
Today, we are surrounded by noise and news, but Jesus invites us to stop. Do we still know how to marvel? Can we be “little ones” who notice the miracle of a kind gesture, a second chance, the quiet presence of God in the poor, the sick, the abandoned?
As we celebrate the 176th anniversary of the Claretian Missionaries, we give thanks for those who, like Saint Anthony Mary Claret, learned to see with wonder, to preach with fire, and to serve with humility. May we too become little ones—capable of amazement, free from pride, and ready to reflect God’s love in our world.
Let us ask Mary, who praised God with a simple heart, to teach us to bless the Father each day and to marvel once more at His goodness. Amen.
