Wednesday of the Sixth Week of Easter
John 16: 12-15
Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth
In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (Jn 16:13). This is important. Jesus doesn’t say we already possess the whole truth — no, He says we will be guided toward it. The truth is not a possession; it is a journey. The Spirit leads us, step by step. We are the pilgrim people of hope, walking together, listening, discerning.
But sometimes, we act as if we already have all the answers. Some Christians close themselves off from dialogue, convinced they are the only ones who truly understand, while others are in error. This is not the way of the Spirit. This attitude risks becoming like that of the Pharisees, who elevated traditions above love, above mercy, above the commandment to forgive.
The Church is not a fortress of the righteous — it is a people on the move, walking in the light of a single lantern: the Holy Spirit. Like pilgrims at night, we don’t always see everything clearly, but we know our destination. We walk with others — scientists searching for healing, leaders seeking justice, mothers and fathers raising families, people of different faiths who seek peace. We all, in our way, long for what is good, and the Spirit animates these efforts.
This is the Church Jesus desires: humble, listening, discerning. A Church that collaborates with all who seek truth and justice. A Church that excludes no one, condemns no one, but builds bridges, not walls.
Let us pray today: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth! Give us your light to walk, your strength to persevere, and your wisdom to love. Let us be open, hopeful, and courageous — because we believe God is at work in our world, quietly and powerfully, leading us home. Amen.
