A Call to Serve with Love and Humility
In the final hours before His crucifixion, Jesus demonstrated a profound act of humility by washing the feet of His disciples. Foot washing was a common practice in Jesus’ time, performed by servants or slaves, as people entered a home after walking in the dusty streets. Yet, on the eve of His Passion, Jesus, the Master, chose to perform this menial task, shocking His disciples. Through this humble act, He wanted to convey a lesson: true greatness lies in service to others.
Jesus’ actions remind us that He came not to be served but to serve. He did not shy away from this task, despite being the Son of God, because He knew that His mission was to serve humanity—by sacrificing His life for us on the Cross. The washing of the feet symbolised the ultimate act of love and selflessness He would soon demonstrate.
As Christians, we are called to imitate Christ’s humility and love. We are reminded that serving others—especially the poor, the suffering, and the marginalised—is not a menial job but is a true reflection of Christ’s love. In a world often driven by power, wealth, and competition, Jesus teaches us that the noblest thing we can do is to help one another without seeking reward or recognition.
In the washing of the feet, Jesus invites us to reflect on our own lives. Are we willing to serve those around us with the same love and humility He showed? Let us remember that He is always by our side, ready to wash our feet, forgive our sins, and guide us through the difficulties of life. May we embrace His example, allowing His love to transform us into humble servants of one another.
