Partaking in the building up of the Kingdom
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus imparts a message about generosity. He encourages us to avoid actions driven by self-interest or personal benefit. He calls us to avoid forming relationships based on selfish advantages and instead offer kindness without expecting anything in return, particularly to those who are unable to reciprocate. This approach captures the core of Christ’s teachings, sharply contrasting with the self-serving mindset often found in society.
Jesus warns that selfishness and jealousy stem from pride and lead to division. Often, gossip and competition, aiming to promote oneself by diminishing others, subtly undermine relationships. This selfish behaviour damages families, friendships, and communities, much like the everyday rivalries between siblings and colleagues. Jesus calls us to abandon these divisive attitudes and instead embrace humility and peace, recognising the value and dignity of each person we encounter.
True discipleship means following Christ’s example of gratuitous love—doing good without expecting anything in return. This type of selfless love builds unity and peace in small but significant ways. Pope Francis reminds us that peace and harmony begin within our own hearts, homes, and communities. The wars being fought today are rooted in the same rivalries and pride that can take root in our lives.
As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers by fostering unity in our families, workplaces, and parishes. When we act from a place of sincere love and selflessness, we contribute to a culture of peace that radiates outward, touching even the farthest corners of the world. Let us strive to live without rivalry or pride, offering kindness and compassion freely, as Christ did. In doing so, we participate in building the Kingdom of God, one act of selfless love at a time.
